Great images. That light looks so warm for morning – amazing.

I was there just one week before Ike (Christmas Bay), and a three weeks after – doing a shoot along the sea wall the first time and shooting the aftermath the second time. Pretty amazing. The main question I have; Is Earnie’s still there over on Christmas Bay? The road was out, so I couldn’t get there when I was headed that way.

How do you like your Tarpon 160? I have the 140, and it is slowly getting pimped out – installed Amas so it is stable for standing now. I still have to get over the camera drowning fear though!

I’ll take the salt any day.

The light was crazy that morning – I guess very clear air from a recent front might have been the source.

Sadly, Earnie’s isn’t planning on reopening. Ike’s taken out a lot of landmarks – places that folks have known and loved for years. A good example is Tookie’s, in Seabrook. They’re saying they’re not going to be able to reopen either – word from the owner via a friend of mine. Perhaps that’ll change, but…

Heh – your last comment caused a mighty chuckle here Rob.

    🙂

    Slightly inebriated indeed.

    Just a quick technical/technique note here –

I’m always a bit anxious taking the camera out on the water. I have an Olympus C8080 that I have a waterproof housing for, but of course it’s not the camera my Canon is, nor does is have the reach and clarity that the 70-200 f2.8 L-IS gives.

So – here’s how I manage my system when on the water.

I have a waterproof bag that I keep between my legs, and I open it up, and the mouth of the bag is in my lap pointing up, and the camera is resting on a towel, which I lift and wrap over the top of the body when I’m fishing/paddling/etc.

Were I to capsize, it’d be all bad, but I can keep the body dry with the towel, and I can wipe my hands with the outside (opposite of what touches the body) of the towel too.

All in all, it works well.

Just an fyi, in case someone wants to take their good system out on the water, but don’t know how to keep it dry.

I don’t think I’ve had more than the smallest of drops on the body working this way, and I can immediately wipe anything off.

    Hope this helps someone.

    Kendal you amaze me.

Yeah cool pics for sure. I really like the one of the two Thunderbirds flying past each other, that only exists for like a ultra-tiny-milli-second. Did you have your camera in burst mode for that?

    LOL

    I wish.

I shot those with a 3.5 fps Canon XTi.

I’ve seen the show many, many times, and knew the move was coming up, and anticipated the shot – and got very, very lucky.

    Great Pics, thanks Kendal…

I love the way the pics flow.

I appreciate that comment Mike, as I typically try to find a flow to galleries I put up.

What David said. if grey wet uninteresting tell the story.

You know that pro Bass Tourney I just did?
I didnt think there was much potential in them due to all the corporate branding, despite that I still do them. What little potential I thought existed evaporated the day I started the “Why do we do this” thread.

Cold, miserable, rain, high ISOs, bleak skies, some noise in the images, very limited “artistic” opportunity, yada, yada. If not for the fatc it was an event on “my” scales of measurement most (read 90%) would have met the trash bin.

Within 3 days of shooting and posting the gallery for the particpants to visit, I’ve had an expression of interest from an AD in buying some and more importantly a successful Outdoor Writer with credits in most of the biggest publications in NA emailed me asking if Id work on commission or collaboration for his articles as he doesnt do the photogrpahy himself (he does but he realises its not good enough).
That alone is worth its weight in gold as his articles will get my name in fornt of ADs who right now probably wouldnt give me the time of day.

Thats more than Ive gotten from the hundreds/thousands of technically better, more vivid, more eye catching photos ive got.

As a general rule beyond what DA suggested.

    Slow the camera down.
Slow ISOs and low SSs help with colours, saturation etc.

    Hell yeah John!

    That last shot works brother.

    John –

Is that portrait a crop? (Please say yes)

The reason I ask is, if you leave more negative space top and left margin, you’ve a cover shot there my man.

    Kendal,

You are right, I took no time at all cleaning up the reels, or my sensor and lens for that matter.

    Osprey are cool, nice capture

    Agreed

Great thread Matt, thanks for posting as it is helping me as well.

Kendal- I see the spots on the silver reel, but can you point out the dust spots you speak of in the other?

    D.

    Sure –

The black reel – first photo – 1 spot below the reel mount, and one light one about a half inch from the the right edge close to 3 o’clock.

2nd photo: one directly below the reel mount, and then the same one right edge.

There are also a couple spots on the reel faces too – very light, near the edges.
    Silver reel – photo 1:

    Great shots

Makes me hungry for mashed potatoes

    LOL – that’s *exactly* what I thought when I saw #3!

in reply to: My first stab at product photography #65280

Nice composition – and I think you’ve nearly nailed exposure.

That said – I find the lens dust spots very disconcerting.

And – on the silver reel, you’ve some spots on the 11 o’clock position of the reel that are screaming at me.

    Clone baby clone!

Looks like a magical place indeed – and I especially like the 3rd shot, with the deep shadows on the rock.

Congratulations on ticking off another from the list.

    Chad –

Keep in mind I’m an old Norseman from northern Minnesota and my brain froze frequently while I grew up, so I might not be the best test subject.

Negative – no F-22 flying on Saturday, and I don’t know if it flew Sunday or not. You can bet I’d have shot it if I’d have seen it!

in reply to: New website design (feedback) #65262

Very clean – easy to navigate, though I found myself waiting for a few moments at the first page as I expected an image slideshow to load in the main window, and it wasn’t clear to me that the site was loaded.

But then, I’m a little slow on the uptake sometimes.

in reply to: Why do we do what we do :) #65323

    Indeed – nice work.

I don’t know about putting my camera down under a pontoon boat in swells, er, not without a waterproof bag/housing anyway!
