Spent the morning near Galveston, fishing for redfish on the fly with a friend.
He was the master – I mostly shot, though picked up one (to his half-dozen)
Beautiful morning – just beautiful.
These fish were in about a foot and a half of water – the shots with the birds hovering are indicative of behavior wherein they will feed on the shrimp, etc that the redfish kick up off the bottom.
When you’re on the flats, in shallow water, and you see birds and a disturbance in the water below – it’s redfish. (almost always)

Had been forever since I’d been out paddling, and shooting – it felt great!

Just a quick technical/technique note here –
I’m always a bit anxious taking the camera out on the water. I have an Olympus C8080 that I have a waterproof housing for, but of course it’s not the camera my Canon is, nor does is have the reach and clarity that the 70-200 f2.8 L-IS gives.
So – here’s how I manage my system when on the water.
I have a waterproof bag that I keep between my legs, and I open it up, and the mouth of the bag is in my lap pointing up, and the camera is resting on a towel, which I lift and wrap over the top of the body when I’m fishing/paddling/etc.
Were I to capsize, it’d be all bad, but I can keep the body dry with the towel, and I can wipe my hands with the outside (opposite of what touches the body) of the towel too.
All in all, it works well.
Just an fyi, in case someone wants to take their good system out on the water, but don’t know how to keep it dry.
I don’t think I’ve had more than the smallest of drops on the body working this way, and I can immediately wipe anything off.

Great images. That light looks so warm for morning – amazing.
I was there just one week before Ike (Christmas Bay), and a three weeks after – doing a shoot along the sea wall the first time and shooting the aftermath the second time. Pretty amazing. The main question I have; Is Earnie’s still there over on Christmas Bay? The road was out, so I couldn’t get there when I was headed that way.
How do you like your Tarpon 160? I have the 140, and it is slowly getting pimped out – installed Amas so it is stable for standing now. I still have to get over the camera drowning fear though!
I’ll take the salt any day.

Sadly, Earnie’s isn’t planning on reopening. Ike’s taken out a lot of landmarks – places that folks have known and loved for years. A good example is Tookie’s, in Seabrook. They’re saying they’re not going to be able to reopen either – word from the owner via a friend of mine. Perhaps that’ll change, but…
