J.B. I am not quite sure how the whole guide thing works where you are at but here in Montana guides can only guide under an outfitter. An outfitter must sign your license and is basically responsible for how you conduct yourself when you are out guide. If you as the guide screw up you could get your outfitter fined or even get his license taken away. So to make it worth the outfitters time he gets a cut from EVERY trip that guide makes. For instance, I guide exclusively for Rock Creek Cattle Co. and my outfitters fly shop is 85 miles away. He does nothing to set me up with my clients. They are all booked through the ranch I work for. But he gets a cut of every trip I make. Without him I could not guide so I have no problem giving him his cut.
I think I would try to work out something fair for the both of you. I think that really you only have something to gain by doing that.

Hippie, I think every rod line has a strong one in their series. The BIIx 6wt is that rod in my opinion. I too am not a big fan of the 5wt but I would rather wrestle a Grizzly than give my 6wt away.

Actually Lando that should be a nice white valley floor by Saturday morning! Oh and then 65 degrees on Sunday. God I love fall!!!
Mike I would really look into the BIIx 6wt since you like chucking the streamers. I have been very happy with mine. I would also take a hard look at the new BIImx. From the guys I have talked to that have got a chance to cast it it sounds like a sweet rod!

Ron is not allowed to leave Montana until the end of October. I need him here to harrass for the rest of the month! 😉 Plus I don’t think he has had his fill of cold weather fishing yet!

Great report Mike! I fished the Thompson Spring creek when I was in guide school. In fact the picture of me with the brown trout pictured with my name on this post is from Thompson. Great little spring creek and really nice folks there at the MZ Ranch.
It was cold and windy/snowy/rainy here yesterday. But damn the fishing was good! I was out with a client all day and we hooked a lot of browns! I myself was really on a roll. Everytime the client handed me the rod I was hooked up! I love it when that happens. 🙂 If you get a wild hair to come over the mountains drop Ron or I a note and we will get you hooked up!

Brain, I would try contacting RIO if I were you. If the line is new and you have damaged it to the point you had to cut the welded loop off of it I think you will forever be disappointed in the line. RIO had been good to me in the past so I would try to get a new line out of them and keep this damaged one for you practice line.

Good luck on your trip Mike! I look forward to your posts from the field. Be sure to eat at the Chop House in Livingston if you fish the Yellowstone at all. Some of the best grub I have ever had! And if you come west of the mountains be sure to let “Bill” and myself know and we will take you to Bills favorite spots! 🙂 (I just want to find out where they are.)

Seafood, the only bad days in Montana are when the forest fires are burning and the smoke is so thick your eyes burn! Other than that there are no bad days!
Mike that sounds like a great trip! Are you going solo on all of your fishing adventures or will you be hiring a guide? I have been getting some great reports on the Madison and the Ruby this past week. You should have a great fishing vacation!!!

This is one of my most memorable fishies. My first steelhead! I hooked it on an egg sucking leech and then had to chase it down river about a 1/4 of a mile before I could land it! The fight lasted about 25 minutes and the whiskey celebration afterwards lasted the rest of the day. 🙂
My other one was a big brown trout I caught on a lead eyed bugger on 5x tippet because it was getting late and I didn’t want to tie a new leader on. I will see if I can find that picture and post it!

Grant, When I have spoke to my Simms rep about their womens products he told me that it is something that the company is interested in but they will be taking it really slow and only adding a few items a year if the demand is there. It might be a while until you see an actual womens boot.
I recommend the Simms L2 boot for women. 90% of the women I sell these boots too love them because they actually fit.
