    Hello everyone!

First post… great site! As a relatively new fly fisherman I’ve found the site content excellent.

    So on to my question:

One way to fix the line is to taper both ends of the line at the break.

    Funny,

I have the same rod it is a nice rod (the A2 8.5 #5)  The reason I asked is that I was fishing with a guy named Brian who has a Sage Fli and the same line you do.  He had the same problem with his line, I cut it off before he broke it off on a fish and tied in a loop connector with mono.  I thought you were him for a minute there.  Glad to see you on this forum amyways.

I would think that it’s probably fine the way it is.

Thanks everyone! Good points and suggestions. I’ll try and reattach the line. I do not really have anything to lose. If it does not work out I think the idea of using longer leaders makes good sense.

So Bob, I think I follow everything you suggest up until the nail knots. I’m trying to figure out 1) what to use to nail knot over the spliced area and 2) how to use two nail knots to “secure the line”. Perhaps some backing or mono? And should the two nail knots somehow be structurally attached to one another (e.g. their tag ends threaded through each other)?

I’d just use it man, as soon as you throw a strike indicator on there the front taper doesn’t really matter, that reminds me I need to chop the front taper off one of my lines so I can splice on a sink tip…

Actually you should buy a new floater and some T-14 and make a nice little 75 grain sink tip!

Brain, I would try contacting RIO if I were you. If the line is new and you have damaged it to the point you had to cut the welded loop off of it I think you will forever be disappointed in the line. RIO had been good to me in the past so I would try to get a new line out of them and keep this damaged one for you practice line.

The front taper of all fly lines is flat for a few feet in order to allow for successive cuts back as anglers add nail-knotted leaders.

    HI Brian,
May i suggest that you look at the diameter at the butt of the normal leaders you use

    Brian,

I know that your first fly line is special and we need to get out and practice as well as fish the lines.
