Joel ThompsonMemberI went fishing yesterday evening and it was absolutely a picture perfect fall day here in western Montana! It absolutely rejuvinated my soul! The colors were popping and the fish were biting hard! It truely doesn’t get much better than that in my opinion. Anyhow I wanted to post a few pictures that I took. I really struggle taking pictures of fish when I am by myself so please excuse the lack of quality in the photos. One of the brown trout that caught had a very grey belly on it. Something I had never noticed before last night. I have not figured out how to post more than one picture at a time so I will post it after this one.
By the way, the brown bugger was KING last night! I was hooked up constantly until dark! Good times!!

MemberJoel,
Actually I’ll be in Bozeman, Twin Bridges and West for a total of 14 days starting tommorow for the sole purpose of fishing and eating. Am actually excited about the wet, cloudy, cool whether as I’ve been know to throw streamers at fish rising to Bluewings. Am all geared up and prepared for the October weather and Browns in MT. I’ll be posting trip details as I go.

Joel ThompsonMemberSeafood, the only bad days in Montana are when the forest fires are burning and the smoke is so thick your eyes burn! Other than that there are no bad days!
Mike that sounds like a great trip! Are you going solo on all of your fishing adventures or will you be hiring a guide? I have been getting some great reports on the Madison and the Ruby this past week. You should have a great fishing vacation!!!

MemberThe only reason Joel posted those pics is to rub it in. I couldn’t go because I had to tend bar at the lodge last night while that lucky moosedog went to chase the fishes. We scouted that hole earlier in the day and I was jonesin’ bad. Nice work buddy.

MemberEnjoy your trip and if you get bored down there, holler at us and we’ll sneak in and wade the hole in the picture above, we might even invite Joel. ;D

Thanks for tips and the offer.

Member…..Listen…for those of us stuck on the east coast…is there really any bad day in Montana??…..
Seafood-I grew up in the southern foothills of the Rockies. About a dozen or so years ago I was in Albuquerque and made a wrong turn. Wound up in Nashville, TN and stayed. I’ve been missing the west ever since.
Last summer, my buddy Caneybuff and I came out here for a few days to fish and attend a memorial service for Scott Waldie. As Joel so eloquently stated above, “it rejuvinated my soul.” I couldn’t get this territory out of my mind or my heart. I longed for this place from the very depths of my being. It was an ache from within. I went back home after that trip, but my heart stayed here.
Over the winter, I wound up making some major life changes so I could get here. I am very fortunate to have landed this gig. This morning while driving up the mountain and the nearly full moon was setting over the peaks, the only thing I could do was give thanks for being here. No, there is no bad day in Montana.

MemberBrowns are starting to spawn now right? That explains the belly look at this post spawn rainbow:

When the fish go into their spawning runs they get old and kinda nasty, I bet the fish above is now silver as a steelheadSep 29, 2007 at 5:35 pm #19732Zach Matthews
The Itinerant AnglerThat could be due to the spawn but I doubt it; spawning browns tend to go the other way and flush bright colors, and they will spawn until much later in the year.

MemberJoel, Back to your original post, I’ve seen similar with spawning browns in Michigan.
My buddy caught this big boy in January.

Zach, I won’t be heading home until the first week of November. Mike and I have been talking and I hope we can go back to where you guys went last year and get me some of that. Joel has been invited but not sure if he can make it during that time.
