    Hey Zach
I use Malin-7 20# test stainless steel wire for my articulated streamers/flies.
It is a strong, thin but somewhat stiff cable designed for making your own steel leaders.
    Works great IMHO.
I wrote up my technique in my March 2013 Fly Tying column in the Alberta Outdoorsmen.
I could send you a photo copy if you would like to take a look.

A bit late to the rodeo but I have been using Solarez UV resin for a couple of years now. Actually trialing it for the Canadian market.

They have Thin, Thick and Flexible formulas. As well there is another, newer mix they call Bone Dry which is an Ultra Thin formula.

I have honestly found it to be a really useful product for most of the flies I tie.
Well worth a look for sure.

I have been saving/collecting fur and feathers for the better part of 40 years for my fly tying.
Grouse of all types, pheasant, rabbits, the odd squirrel, deer, elk, bear and moose have all found their way into my stash. I have so much deer hair I could likely open a shop lol.
In Oct a friend gave me a box of peacock swords and eyes. Apparently his aunt raises them. I have high hopes he will lay his hands on an entire skin one day for me!

I plan to start trapping in the near future as there are plenty of furs that are great tying materials but shops don’t carry. A trapper friend gifted me a damaged Marten hide a couple years ago. (He couldn’t sell it due to damage) What a fantastic material!

Don’t overlook any type of wild game, the potential is incredible.

Santa was good to me, well him and my family.

A Boyt Harness Co case for my O/U CZ in the perfect size
A pair of Kennetrek Pak boots
A Gransfors Bruks Diamond axe file
Several highly coveted spools of Largantun silver tinsel greeted my on Christmas AM.
On Christmas Eve we were informed by one of my sons that we could expect to be grandparents this summer (again)
    A pretty good season!

May we all have a safe, happy, healthy and productive 2016.

A bird hunting and shotgun forum would be interesting indeed.
Grouse hunting and fly-tying/fishing go hand in hand.

Willie’s Roadhouse on Sirius is on most of the time. Love the original Country tunes. On road trips I’ll toss a few Corb Lund and Gretchen Wilson CDs in the truck.

Hi, I’m Jeff Smith. I live in SE Alberta, retired here after 26+ years in the Canadian Forces as a Medic.
I spend as much time as I can tying flies and fly fishing around Alberta. When not doing that I keep busy hunting waterfowl, upland game, both white tail and mule deer, elk and moose. I write the fly tying column in the Alberta Outdoorsmen magazine.

Married for 32 years this summer, we have three boys and two grand daughters.

Jeff there’s a place here in Atlanta (not sure where you are) down in the Virginia Highlands that has their entire collection of axes, including a couple that I swear are Viking battle axes re-named for some non-warlike purpose. It’s a wood working shop across the street from the Highland Tap.<p abp=”293″>

Thanks Zach. I’m in SE Alberta, 2 1/2hrs East of the Crowsnest River.
Found there is a company in Ontario that carries their stuff as well.
My wife took care of getting the GFB Small Forest axe for me. Very cool item.

Hey, Did everyone get what they hoped for??

Gransfors Bruks small axe. Been wanting/needing one for a while now.
So many uses around camp regardless if it is fishing or hunting season.

Peter, thanks for the link. Very cool fly. Just tracked down a couple of materials I didn’t have,(No fly shop nearby so I look for new tying stuff when away from home) now if I can get some tying in between duck hunts. Don’t know where the summer went.

Peter, Where do I find the you tube tutorial?
My home river is just now becoming fishable. We had incredible floods here in Southern Alberta, I am downstream of both the Oldman and Bow River watersheds, they actually come together to form the South Sask River, we were on the receiving end of all the floodwaters so I haven’t had the opportunity to fish or do much in the way of tying this summer. I am ready now for sure!
    Thanks

Well, The Great Flood of 2013 has passed here in Southern Alberta but the damage that was caused to homes, towns and cities is unbelievable. The damage to habitat is also incredible. The course of several well known trout waters in Alberta has been altered, pools and runs are gone it appears. Mother Nature is resilient and has seen this before no doubt.
A friend who guides the Bow sent me some pictures of the damage to the Lower Bow.
Here in SE Alberta where I live, the South Sask River was running at nearly 6000 cubic meters/sec. The S Sask is formed by the confluence of the Bow and Oldman systems, both of which flooded.
Hopefully fishing returns to normally quickly.

My plan to zip over to the Bow River this week are gone. We have had an incredible amount of rain the last couple days. Now the everything from the Bow through the Elbow, Sheep and Highwood down through the Oldman and likely the Crowsnest are all flooding, and I mean flooding.
Most small towns along the way are evacuated this AM, highways closed/washed out. Even parts of Calgary are evac’ed including downtown. Yikes.
Is it 2005 again or worse? Gonna be a long summer.

I’ll bet a Walleye would just smoke that thing! Gonna have to give it a try this summer as my home river is full of ‘eyes.

    Hey Zach,
This is looking pretty good. Tried to log in a few days ago but was blocked by “Site Maintanence”, seems you were in the process of moving stuff over. Nice job, thanks for the work.

Man I need some ice free water soon so I can get some pics in. Mine has only spent time at the tying desk so far!
