On my first ever trip to the Seychelles, I got one of those thin “Pro” Hoya CPs, thinking it would be tougher. It did not last the trip. Sent it back and got a refund. Never had problems with the cheaper Hoya CPs, they always seemed to be tough as old boots.

Been using the Singh Ray warming CPs for a while now and they are simply sublime. Expensive, but worth every single cent if you ask me.

Many thanks for looking guys, most kind……….

Zach – yes, it’s a GT, and yes, Indo-Pacific Permit (plenty out there, still as hard to get to take a fly though !!), plus bones etc.

Mike – have a great trip. A friend of mine went there a couple of years ago and loved it.

Not sure about planning for angles, but others may well disagree – often the photo just pops into ones’ head……….

Have a good one, look forward to seeing the pix on your return.

Thanks guys – I count myself extremely fortunate to be able to work a fair amount with South African anglers. Awesome people and some hugely talented guides and fishermen.

Thanks guys for taking a look, and for the hugely kind comments…..

Yes, they use a short 30lb wire biting tippet. And yes, it is not easy to get “purchase” in that mouth – talk about doing all they can to set the hook home, but a number of fish are lost. It’s the nature of this fishing.

Super-aggressive fish, wonderfully brutal and unsubtle fights. I have done a lot of work in Africa, in some weird and wonderful places at times, and I have never, ever had a bad experience. I love it, and this kind of tigerfishing to me is like a complete kind of Africa experience rolled into one. Awesome fish, true wilderness (but boy are you looked after), wildlife etc. – can’t beat trying to get to sleep with the sound of lions roaring and hynenas coughing. Plus various animals rustling around outside your (luxury safari) tent. Tarzan I am not !! There is nowhere like Africa, and there is so much fishing over there…..

Kind of torn with my photos a bit – we managed to get out on the odd sandbank to get a few grip and grins, close up on the fish shots etc., but somebody had to keep a close eye out for crocs etc., and we always worked very quickly for that reason. I had a number of shots in my head that I simply could not get, but that is the nature of this fishing I suppose. One of the boats was attacked by a hippo the week before we got there – thing came out of nowhere and locked its jaws on the side of the vessel. Everybody was fine, but yes, you looked around when answering a call of nature !!

When you Ingest (download pix from card) in the editing programme Photo Mechanic, you can specifiy a second destination for the images to be saved to…………an external hard drive for example.

David – maybe I am doing something wrong, but I very rarely crop my images for clients. Not for any real reason other than I have found that clients I work with tend to like having the freedom to crop as they see fit, if indeed they want or need to.

I do resize my images and store them separately, but that’s just for web, blog and sample use.

I very rarely crop my stuff – unless I have messed the horizon up a bit and need to straighten it out !! Guilty as charged from time to time when things get hectic…….

As I said, I have a lot to learn about black and white – and also the power of a programme like SEP – thanks guys, some very cool stuff there, and also serious food for thought…….

Anyway, it’s not black and white, but I think I said earlier that I would dig out a photo of my sheepdog and post it up here.

I have used both these lenses, and personally I reckon the 70-200 f4 is far and away the better lens…….and it works just fine with the 1.4 on it.

Chad – thanks so much for that.

Morsie – when you find various b&W looks that you like, you can create Photoshop Actions that involve the pre-sets you can save in the NIK programme.

Matt – very cool blog, good luck after the redfish, a species I so want to see one day. I have put a link to you blog on my site – hope that’s ok.

Really interesting to read all this – I hear what you say Zach……..I have a lot to learn about black and white, but I have not owned a film body for a long time now !! It’s a digital darkroom all the way for me.

Gear – Nikon D3, Nikon 100mm f.28VR macro lens (awesome bit of kit), natural light – deliberate shallow depth of field, around f4 I think.

Point taken on contrast, but I deliberately processed them this way – plus I underexposed slightly when shooting to retain the contrast and “mood”. I get the feeling that black and white is a hugely personal thing.

As I said, I have no history with black and white at all – it was always 35mm colour trannies before digital for me. I use the NIK Software Silver Efex Photoshop plug-in for black and white conversions. Again, so much to learn about it, but it seems to be an incredible programme that gives somebody like me a kid of virtual darkroom on my computers. If any of you want to mess around with it, go to the NIK software site and download a trial of it.

Very cool looking dog Zach – when I get back home I will dig out a photo of my sheepdog.

That tarpon scale pic is just awesome……..nice one Brett.

It inspired me to have a go at the Daily Dozen with a photo of mine shot last weekend – somewhat shocked to see it up there.

I feel a bit stupid because I had never come across that Nat Geo “Daily Dozen” thing – and then Jay posted that link to Brett’s awesome tarpon scale shot up there. So I thought why not, give it a shot and see if my crashing wave shot gets up there…………never thought it would to be perfectly honest.

Thanks for flagging it up, really pleased to get a photo up there !!

Olle – there were a few fish around, but we did not catch them. Winter is a hard time here for catching (sea) bass on lures, sure it’s the same with you guys ? But just so cool to be out when conditions were going off like that.

I put a blog post up on it here if it’s of interest

Thanks guys for the kind comments……
