Starting to really like Lightroom 2 more and more since coming over to it from ACR – but the day it loads up and generates previews as fast as the old RawShooter programme did, then it will be as close as possible the complete RAW processor for me.

Adam – stunning stuff as always, you have one hell of an eye for making fishing just look so hugely impressive and engaging. Outstanding.

Guys, thank you so much, means a huge amount that people look at the stuff and like it.

Simon – I so want to get back to the Bahamas, and specifically Inagua. Shot that stuff a while ago now, but I am still fairly pleased with some of it.

Ben – never thought of swapping around the blacks and the whites, that sounds really interesting. Thanks for the heads up on the metal printing – to be honest, if I print this end it’s only ever on a fairly good A4 printer to put up in my office, the bulk of my photos go off to magazines etc., and I have a huge amount to learn about printing, displaying etc.

    Plenty for the future.

Norwegian black metal all the way – and specifically the new Immortal album “All Shall Fall” at the moment. Peace and quiet when out fishing/photographing, but metal in the car.

Bob – bearing in mind that I don’t really have much of a clue about traditional black and white practises, I use the awesome NIK Software Silver Efex Pro……….it works as a Photoshop or Lightroom plug-in.

Check here, you can download a 15 day trial of it :

I just mess around with black and white for a bit of fun really, done purely to my personal taste. As you can see from the first (colour) shot in the sequence above, they were shot as very deliberately toned down photos. Black and white was what I had in my head from the off. They simply did not work when you allowed the camera’s meter to say “this is the reading”, the mix of bright sun, dark, shaded background and side-lit angler was essentially frying the meter’s brain – SLRs are incredibly accurate a lot of the time, but as I am sure most guys who work around fishing know full well, the trick is knowing when to take full control.

My thanks. Not the kind of shot it is possible to get very often, hence they are meant to be a little different.

Anybody got any experience with having their photos printed on metal ? I hear more and more about, just wondered if it is worth looking into.

Like these guys do it I imagine ?

Keith – thanks for your comments, taken on board. The colour shot is the one that is meant to have just a little bit of colour in the background, while the fisherman remains gently lit by the sun – I was aiming for a black and white conversion of the same shot that would in fact take any hint of texture out of the background, in order to leave the angler gently side-lit, and the whole emphasis of the photo becomes him, plus a few rocks, part of the rod and line etc.

But I see what you are getting at. Photography is so cool because we all see shots very differently, and what floats the boat of one person can leave the next perplexed.

My thanks for such kind words. There is some awesome stuff posted up here by some very talented people, I love looking at it – nobody makes fishing look as good as fishermen.

There is some very good fishing for largemouth and smallmouth yellowfish within a couple of hours of Johannesburg, on the Vaal river – these hard scrapping things are a blast on the fly. Some pix of yellowfish are here if that is any help

If you want some good people to speak to about guided fishing, contact me through my website and I will put you in touch with them. Awesome country, seriously special, very cool people.

I don’t have the Blue/Gold filter from Singh ray – just a couple of their awesome 77mm LB polarising ones……..have thought about it, perhaps I need to look at playing with one ? But I tend to do what I can in bad light and work on cutting the sky out when it is grey and washed out (shooting fishermen against rocks, mountains, trees etc.), and then enjoy shooting wide when the light goes off.

I was waiting for their raft to start sinking via the studded boots, would have made a fantastic photo – get the shots and then tell them they are going under !! Anything for a photo…….

I find it far easier to get more dramatic shots if you tell the guys AFTER the event !! I do a lot of lure fishing for our sea bass (a bit like smaller versions of your stripers I guess) over here and in Ireland, and sometimes the conditions get a little “lively” – I saw this wave coming and saw the shot straight away. “Did you not see it coming ?”, I asked my two (soaking wet) friends afterwards………….!!

Zippers are fine if you keep the dry-zip part well lubricated with T-Zip………and yes, it feels fairly stiff to start with, but eases up with use. I could not survive without these waterproof bags.

The two Lowepro DryZone models all the way – which one depends on where and what I am photographing. The smaller model is great for walking and walking and walking……..one body, couple of lenses, and some fishing gear/drink etc. in the top compartment.

Thanks so much for taking a look – the only reason I can go on trips like these is because it is work for me. Not quite sure how it has come to this, but I love what I do, and I want to do all I can to show these places off in the best light possible. The fact that fishing can put us in such special places I suppose is why a lot of us do it ?

My sincere thanks for the kind comments. These are just a very quick selection that I grabbed on my first pass through. More in due course, still editing, keywording etc.

Grant – I use the Singh Ray LB Polarizing filters. They are expensive but awesome………and then just hope for decent conditions and be ready to shoot like crazy when the light goes insane or the fishing starts happening. Kinda hectic but fun.
