Bryan Gregson
MemberHi all,
I’m looking for any information on South Africa fly fishing. I’m going into this blind, so any info would be great.
The trip is months away – February-ish. But I figure I’d better start poking around now before the fall fishing throttle gets buried.
Thanks,

MemberNot certain the exact species yet….hoping to target a few of them. Just poking around for any info at this point.
ha!…Yeah kinda. I’ll be missing the first part of the good snow…. but by the time I get home the big lines should be filled in and ready to go ; )

MemberNot sure if this helps but I had drinks with Tom Lewin from Frontier Fly Fishing out of South Africa last week and he raved about their tigerfish down there, big nasty toothy critters. His office is out of Johannesburg and I’m sure he could help you out or point you in the right direction? I would love to get down there one of these days and from the sound of it, the Pirates are out in full force so beware if headed for some Salt.

MemberThere is some very good fishing for largemouth and smallmouth yellowfish within a couple of hours of Johannesburg, on the Vaal river – these hard scrapping things are a blast on the fly. Some pix of yellowfish are here if that is any help

If you want some good people to speak to about guided fishing, contact me through my website and I will put you in touch with them. Awesome country, seriously special, very cool people.

Memberwe stayed at the madikwe game park on the madikwe river. there were leg length catfish in there that would pound chunks of olive bread tossed to them. all i had was a 7′ 5wt.
go find them and tell me how it goes. the park was top notch too.

MemberHey Bry,
While I would be torn between catching trout not only half way around the world but on the African Continent…..If you have the chance, this just looks KILLER!!!
Tiger Fish – looks like a cross between a striper and an alligator

Have to admit… the trip, flies, and the fish would make an awesome article and that tail just calling your name for a truly SICK fin shot!!!

Henry G – uh, HOLY SHEEEET! I got lost in your album for a while, wow! I hit ya up.
Rob – that’s kinda what I’m sniffing around for, thank you!
KRKaloz – I dream of fins like that, oh the tail is so purdy ; )… might have to brown bag the face though, ouch!
Many karma points to you fellas! I sincerely thank you all!

Mike McKeownMemberHey, where did I miss this post…
Where you going?
What you want to do?
How long is the stay?Etc…
I am based in Johannesburg, but have fished this country flat. I can put you onto some serious fishing, for Yellowfish, Trout and Tiggers.

MemberYou need not worry about pirates, we dont really find them along our shores.
The guiding company Henry spoke is probably the best there is in the game.
Here is some more info on them
And some moreAlternatively, contact Mike or myself while you are here, we have a few streams we can take you out to. Species include Small Mouth Yellow Fish, Large Mouth Yellow Fish, Barbel(Catfish), Rainbows and Browns and Tigers, all within a short drive. I suggest you bring nothing smaller than a 6wt, except for the trout, there you can bring a 4wt or if you have lighter, then that will work too.
You are sure to enjoy some of the best fishing you’ve had before.
