MemberI don’t print stuff on inkjets, and i know from what i’ve heard there are certain resolutions that work best on them – so having said that, here is what i have learned over the last 10 years of using photoshop on resizing, which can be very confusing:
The whole idea of resolution can be a very grey and hard to understand area.

MemberHeres some feedback:
1. Pretty good shot, creative perspectives are always interesting. I wish i had more spots in michigan where we can get up above the rivers and look down. What i don’t like about this one is that my eye is really drawn to the large rock and it seems to be overpowering the rest of the composition. Maybe it because its the only light colored object in the scene. It would be interesting to compare a similar shot without the rock and see if it feels any better.
2 and 3. I like both of these. What i think makes both of these shots is the lighting/post production. The overall effect of both in these photos serves to do a much better job of drawing the eye to the important stuff in the image. Care to share of this was photoshop or done in camera… if in camera, how did you set up the lights? The third one does a especially nice job to highlight and the hackle colore creates some great contrast and focal point.
4. While i applaud the idea of bringing flyfishing into the studio, this image doens’t do much for me personally. maybe its just a bit to sterile for flyfishing.
I clicked thru the rest of the images and i am diggin your use of light (or lack of light) with the dark deep tones and backgrounds.

MemberOne thing i forgot to mention last night that may help you shorten up the whole “8-10 months to decide” thing.

MemberI would take a look at one of the consumer canon or nikon models. Something like the digital rebel or the d40. I know the canon rebel offers the same image chip as the higher end models, just without some of the custom features in usability. For all intents and purposes, you will get the same image as you would with the higher end cameras, its just that higher end cameras can be a bit easier to use.
Besides that, you are buying into a reputable system with both of them. I would also put money into the lenses rather than the body, if you have to cut back somewhere.

MemberI’ll tell you what.. some of you guys are hilarious! The sentiment shared by many that some manufactuers are more blue collar or working man class cracks me up. If we were working men or truly blue collar, we would all be dunking worms, throwing hardware and fishing with zebco reels. For goodness sakes, we are all flyfishermen and women, and who gives a s**t what gear you use as long as it works for you. Guess what, all the rods that i own that come to mind are Orvis. And most of my reels.. GASP. I guess that makes me a yuppy. Seriously, I’ve never laughed so hard in my life.
I’ve seen guys with orvis rods, TnT’s, Sage, Winston, and guess what, no matter how much money you spend, its still the guy holding on to the rod that has to make it work.

MemberI tried the glowing material both at night and in the daytime with streamers and waking night fly patterns, and had terrible luck with it.

MemberSpencer and everyone else, the key to keeping feet warm in the winter is to keep them DRY!!! You can have all the wool and polypro and everything else that you want, but your feet are still going to sweat, and once they are wet, it won’t be long till they are cold. While researching a hunting trip to canada where we had temperaters in the morning of -20 F everyday, i found one tidbit of info that saved me:
USE SPRAY ANTI-PERSPERINT ON YOUR FEET!!!!
It will stop the sweating for at least a few hours if not the whole day, and theyby keep your feet much warmer. I’ve been doing this for hunting, snowmobiling, and about anything else out in the cold and i have been much happier ever since. Also, make sure you order boot sizes at least one of not 2 sizes to big. All this insulation is there to create a DEAD AIR SPACE, and when you cram it into a boot thats to small you defeat the puprose. Also, if your going to be out all day, pack a second pair of socks along to change into, a pair of dry socks will do you wonders after you’ve sweated out your first pair of socks.
A few other things for fishing in michigan – ditch the breathables, and get a good pair of 5 mil neoprene duck hunting waders with about 2000 g of thinsulate in the boots. You will look like a redneck, but at least you will be a warm redneck. I also use the expedition capilene layered with a lightweight capilene underneath, a layer of fleece, and something to cut the wind. Hands are tough, the only decent solution i’ve found is to have one pair for fishing, and one pair for catching – when you have to get wet, that way at least you will have one dry pair to stick your hands back into.

MemberSounds like your getting alot of advice.. the one thing i would say is glass first, then the body, and i would just get the best you can afford, and then make sure you get insurance.
