Hey gang.  I’ve been involved in a great discussion over on dpreview about DSLR setups that would live an outdoor life – specifically for photography in rugged conditions around water and able to produce magazine print quality images.  If you’re looking to buy a DSLR to take with you to the river, or you dream of changing your last name to Beck, you might want to take a look.  I’m learning a ton.

In time you’ll probably sour on dpreview.

You have received some great feedback both here and at dpreview.  I cannot offer the expertise that so many others have as I am just getting started myself.

All I will tell you is to make sure you get your hands on the K10d before you make your final decision.  As an owner of a K100d I can say I am a very satisfied Pentax user.  Someday I hope to upgrade to the K10d for the many added benefits and features it provides.

While Pentax certainly is lagging behind Nikon and Canon in the number of religious followers they have (partially due to a smaller advertising/marketing campaign) I believe Pentax is gaining ground and is simply “flying under the radar” right now…which is perfectly fine with many in the Pentax camp.  They make some great equipment and will soon begin regaining the respect that they once had back in the day.

And no question that Nikon and Canon do some things better.

Poeple say bodies dont make a difference and its more important to invest in good glass first. Thats fairly sound advice, however each and every one of my “body” upgrades have made me very happy and at each step my “photography” improved noticeably.

If you can I would give very serious consideration to the 40D.

That’s the advice I’d gotten when I decided to pursue this as a full time occupation.

    Glass first, body second.

Of course, we’ll always be happy when we’ve a new bit in our hands, eh?

Sounds like your getting alot of advice.. the one thing i would say is glass first, then the body, and i would just get the best you can afford, and then make sure you get insurance.
