MemberI’ve seen those Blackrapids in use and they seem pretty sweet.
I’ve also watched as a Rueters photog’s EOS-1dsmkIII did a head plant off of one at a press event because it came loose. Ouch!
Keep it tight!

Awesome and well said!
Can I use that?

MemberI have one of those and I love it too! $60 doesn’t seem like too much, IMHO, so you should send it to the manufacturer. Even if it’s bumped to over a hundo that’s a pretty good deal for a lens that cost more than eight times that much. Especially if you use it that often. The biggest bummer is just not having it for the month or so Nikon is working on it but what better time than winter?
my 2 cents,

MemberMmmmn! Tasty shot Cor!

MemberThanks Kendal!
That’s the image that just keeps on giving as the ‘Big O’ seems to love that shot. We got an e-mail from them this morning requesting yet another use for it.
Excellent!

MemberAwesome Neal! I just got a shipment of EP fibers and was gearing up for a toothy season tying session. Perfect timing and can’t wait to watch your work!

MemberThanks again guys!
Nice work, Doug. Makes me ready to head south. Who were you fishing with? Was this in Ascension Bay?
We fished with Victor Castro @ Osprey Tours, a top notch outfit, and fished on the outside of Chetemal Bay on the border with Belize. There’s a big outfit called “___ de Cocos” in the area which I have not heard one good thing about so avoid at all costs (the locals call it ‘___ de Locos‘).

MemberI had wondered how well those DiCAPac bags worked with the LX3 .. Did you happen to try any 1/2 n 1/2 pics with it?
Thanks Cor. I tried a few but we were either standing in ankle deep stagnant water, (wading), or floating on five feet (panga) of deep water so they weren’t all I had hoped. Much easier with trout in moving water.

MemberDoug,
Out of curiosity, what camera are you using for the underwater shots? Do you use an underwater housing, or a waterproof P&S? That permit release shot is awesome.
Tim
Cheers Tim!
All of the UW were taken with a Lumix LX3 in a ‘DiCAPac’ housing I found at Adorama. It’s good to a few meters so perfect for fishing but I still hold my breath when I plunge it into saltwater.

Membervery nice report! I liked the pictures too. Did I see a new Hydros in that group of rods?
How did you like the new Orvis reel I saw in the under water shot?….
Thanks Keith!
Yes there was a 8 and a 10wt Helios plus a 7 and a 9wt Hydros. They all rocked. No complaints and these quickly became the preferred sticks. (That hefty permit was caught and landed with the Helios 8wt-BTW) The ten was so light that the Mirage V reel we brought for it was almost too heavy. Still cast a full line no problemo.

MemberPerfect conditions came on the fourth day. Ten minute drive by panga. Five minutes of looking. Guide sees permit.

Dustin sees permit, Dustin cast to permit, Dustin catches permit. Fifty minute tug-o-war with…

… and Dustin will never be the same. Congrats buddy!

The release…

Another day of searching and casting…

…and back up the jungle tunnel we drove.

We’ll be back!
Douglas Barnes
MemberMore searching and more casting. Blue and green tones. Cilantro. Cervesa. Tying flies. Choosing flies.
Douglas Barnes
MemberWe met our guides the next day and spent the next five standing on the bow and searching. Casting. Missing. And searching some more. Victor, the head honcho, told us how it is and showed us the way. Bonefish and snook were landed. Smiles all around. Rods and bendo galor!

Notice the hat…

We get back to the hotel, even the dogs were giddy.

Douglas Barnes
MemberThanks dudes!
Doug, thanks for wearin’ that hat it must be lucky, or somethin’.
Tim, those hands look better than a Palmolive model! 😉
Cant describe how cool it is for me to have a Drake cover shot!

–> a bigger version here <-- Here is the shot Tim is referring to. From the hike we did with Eric last summer.

–> a bigger version here <--Ah ha! That’s the ticket!
Douglas Barnes
MemberGood job Corey. Got a picture of the cover, Douglas? It’s not on the Drake website.
Oh, in other news, Geoff Mueller is now working for the Drake; you can see his writing on the site. Geoff was one of my editors at Fly Fisherman until the economy forced their company to downsize a lot of positions. He’s a great guy and it’s awesome that he’s on board over there.
Zach
I haven’t got a copy either, yet. Just got the word thru the ‘bosch man himself and assumed it’s the shot on their homepage of dude w/bendo on snow with ‘Winter/Spring Issue on Newstands Now!’ in bold red. Dude is me. Straw hat is magic.
Good to hear about Mr. Mueller as well. Kudos!

MemberGreat stuff Tim! Keep ’em coming!
Douglas Barnes
MemberI don’t mean to open a can of worms but I have to ask; is this the result of that cover-shot photo contest Orvis held a while back?
Zach
No, not a contest Zach (I too forgot about that, LOL). Just a WCA/Orvis hook-up through mutual friends or ours. They used a few more images from that shoot in the last couple catalogs as well, + (hopefully) a few shots from a saltwater trip I just returned from last night. Here’s a sneak peek:
