Good stuff Eric! I really like the under exposed background effect w/flash.

I would only suggest warming up the strobe with a gel (1/4 or 1/2 cto) and diffusing it a little.

    Thanks for sharing!

For what it’s worth, it’s definitely not economical to print at home.

I agree. Neither is tying flies at home. But economy isn’t really why we tie our flies at home, right?

To me printing at home brings the craft full circle. It makes one hone their skills a little by concentrating more on final output where the rubber meets the road. I use an Epson Stylus Photo 2200 (13×19, seven colors, yada yada) and I’m quite happy with it. It took some time to figure out my working space & profiles but now I can get consistent repeatable results any time. Quite satisfying. There are several good books on the subject of home printing, here’s one:

Does anyone have a P&S with UW housing and if so…..how does it perform? I’d love to get rid of the bulk associated with a DSLR w/housing….

I agree with you on size/bulk of pro dslr housings. We used them extensively when I assisted for Chris Noble on outdoor shoots, mostly internationally. Although they were fantastic for all the obvious reasons, they were also huge and delicate requiring they’re own Pelican cases etc. (on top of the other six cases we traveled with). I can’t imagine the idea of hiking up a river or drainage with one (read inverse pressure issues, plus falling down).  I live a little too far from the ocean to justify such a novelty item what with all the smaller options available.

Here are some taken with my LX3 and a Dikapak(?) housing.

How about waiting for the next drift boat to come by and saying, “Hey dude, I’ve got a cold PBR in cooler here if you’ll snap this grip-n-grin shot for me!”

Just go fishing with Corey Kruitbosch. He rocks! Problem solved.

Who knows, you may end up on the cover of a fishing magazine. ::)

I’ve always been in the ‘no filter’ camp unless I’m shooting up close in a wet spray environment like a bottle plant and I need the protection, or shooting saltwater stuff through a polarizer to kill a reflection.  We used to use cc, nd, and grad filters of all varieties on 2-1/4 & 4×5 film when needed. Still own a bunch of em’. But not so much with todays’ digital sensors & PS.  The cons outweigh the pros for everyday use.

With apologies to Zach, here’s a link to a great article on the subject by Thom Hogan which lists some good points:

in reply to: Some Thoughts on the Fly Fishing Film Tour #42640

Question Zack, based on your description of the event it sounds like full length films were shown and not just “trailers,” true?

One of my beefs with the last two film tours I went to was that there were no full length, completed films, just trailers for films due out some time in the future or ones you had to purchase.

I’ve been to two of these now including the current version and I have to say that’s the basic deal-e-o, unfortunately. And like Zach is saying, I’d really like to see more beginning to end narratives no matter how long. And some full length films (they showed about a third of the ubiquitous ‘Once in a Blue Moon’ NZ mouse fishing video without explaining that it’s not the whole thing) and not so much ‘hook-up set to music’ mtv style stuff would be better IMHO.

in reply to: Lots of film questions #70409

That’s awesome Adam. Make sure to use the widest lens you can as water adds a 10-15% ‘zoom’ effect and always test your housing in fresh water (sans camera) before you hit the salt. Regarding film, I’d try a 200 or 400 ISO color print film for my first couple rolls as the aqua color balance and tricky uw lighting are easier hurdles to overcome with C-41. After that I’d recommend a Provia100 or something Fujitastic like that (and E-6/ slide film) to get your blues to humm.  😀

In any case, send your rolls to north coast photographic services. They do awesome 5000+ pixel wide scans from 35mm, and @ under $15US, a bargain! They’ve scanned a bunch of my old E-6 stuff too and they really do a superb job (and no, db ain’t gettin’ a kickback either.) Check them out:

How about this being in my box yesterday.  What do you know, Jim Lampros.  What’s next?  Cosmo?

How about the Fly Fishing Film Tour for starters?

Last night was the SLC tourstop and a bunch of us dropped in. There’s a segment about a couple of friends chasing steelhead in Ohio featuring…you guessed it…Jim Lampros!

Good stuff Jim. You’re blowin’ up dude!
