MemberHey Guys, i’m going to buy a new printer. Does anyone have some good advice about what to look for with printers these days?
I’m not going to print al of my images with my home printer but do want to get a good quality when i print one or a few.
Can a multifunctional printer give me good quality or do i need a photo only printer?Apr 4, 2010 at 9:40 pm #70633kurt budliger
MemberI’ve had great experience with Epson printers.

John BennettMemberFor what it’s worth, it’s definitely not economical to print at home.
Nope, not at all.
When friends/acqaintences ask to buy prints and I offer to do it at cost, most are suprised when I break down the cost of a 19 x 13.
With regards to the topic. I don’t know if this still holds true or not but when shopping for my printer a few people in the business of selling prints gave me this to think about.
Epson is probably the best but not as friendly on inks and ink heads.
Canon series are what i use, the i9900 to be specific. Basically the advice given to me was if high volume go Epson, if low volume go Canon.Keep in mind the more colours your printer uses ( mines 8) it gets really expensive replacing inks. A few enlargements, especially ones that are heavy in a primary colour and your replacing a few tanks at considerable cost.

For what it’s worth, it’s definitely not economical to print at home.I agree. Neither is tying flies at home. But economy isn’t really why we tie our flies at home, right?
To me printing at home brings the craft full circle. It makes one hone their skills a little by concentrating more on final output where the rubber meets the road. I use an Epson Stylus Photo 2200 (13×19, seven colors, yada yada) and I’m quite happy with it. It took some time to figure out my working space & profiles but now I can get consistent repeatable results any time. Quite satisfying. There are several good books on the subject of home printing, here’s one:

Hope this fuels the fire.

MemberI agree with Doug, hope I didn’t give the impression that one should only consider economics when deciding to print or not.

MemberWell said Douglas, thats kinda what i have in mind for home printing. Create, test and learn.
My last printer was an Epson but i had ink trouble all the time, i know Epson has a good name but i think i’m going to search a bit more in the Canon printers.
Thanks for the book idea btw.
