If we all took honesty drugs the in studio conversation would go like this:

    Client –
I don’t need to be here in the studio, but I figure since I’m paying you more money for the day than I earn in a month I should have some input to make me feel special.

    Photg –
But you don’t know your face from your ass when it comes to photography and are a bit of a drop kick besides.
I’m still trying to figure out how you got your job as an editor in the first place.

    Client –
I kiss ass better than most and always pay for lunch with the boss.
I also have great taste in power ties.

    Photog-
Fair enough, so Mr power tie, not that I care, but what would you like me to do to make the shot better or more to your liking ?

    Client-
I have no idea, I just want to look like the boss in front of the model who I hired because she has great boobs.
Never mind she’s never modeled before.
Do you think she finds me attractive and would sleep with me to get more work?

    Photog-
Not in a million years, you’re as ugly as a dropped sack of sh*t, have bad breath and are would look up to Bilbo.
Besides, I think she’s checking me out.

    Client-
You’re dreaming, what would she want with a middle aged fool dressed like a early twenties fool who thinks a #1 haircut is a good cover for early baldness ?

in reply to: Stopping down w/ polarizing filter. #63994

The exposure thing is covered above, but I will add a little about when & where to filter.

Polarizers can be over-used, sometimes the reflections make the shot IMO and to blanket wipe them means you might be missing out.

I only use them (in fishing stuff) for big wide angle shots with lots of sky and to get longer exposures for flowing water shots.

All that said, you shouldn’t ever be without one for fishing shots..

Exposure wise, my cameras (DsIII’s) like about +1/2 a stop exposure compensation when shooting wides with a polarizer in our hard light.
    (center weighted metering)
It stops the shadows from getting to dense and leaves me a little room to adjust in post if needed.

Last thing, polarizers vary in quality greatly, I’ve found the Hoya’s I’ve been using are crap compared to some new B&W or Schnieder’s I’ve now got.
They cost HEAPS more, but are more even, have better color and don’t fall apart like the Hoya’s..

    in reply to: D700 – $3000 #63922

If history is anything to go by, the new 5D will push even the DsIII’s for image quality.

I remember being upset when the 5D came out because it’s unprocessed image was very very good and I felt that it made the DsII’s that I’d just bought a pair of seem over priced.
(in reality, the D’s have better AF and are much tougher and more suited to pro work – but photography is a very emotional job

I fish for fun and shoot for money! When you show up with a 35 style DSLR some people think they could do what you are doing if they had the latest Canon or Nikon. When I show up with a Medium or large format digital outfit, lighting, laptop etc it provides a real contrast from the rest of the pack! The image quality is much better as well which further distinguishes you work. If you shoot action you don’t have much of a choice but to use a 35 style camera but you are competing with a larger group of shooters.

There’s a lot of truth in that, now that EVERYBODY has a DSLR and is happy to take on pro work, it is getting harder to stand out from the crowd. ๐Ÿ™‚

But my big problem with medium format is that while the backs have come a long way, the cameras are still way behind a good DSLR in features and speed and are a bit stiff to use for my work.

I think I’m going to get one of those transmitter things for my DsIII’s and ping pictures to the client via a laptop so they feel part of the shoot but are less likely to get in the way.. ๐Ÿ˜‰

The post is ok, looks like hard light to shoot in, but on the whole it all works.

It’s more the moment then the shot that makes it nice.

I think it’s important to get stuff right without the post, if you concentrate on doing things that way you will become a better photographer IMHO..

Very early in my career a very old and wise photographer gave me this advice about shooting magazine stuff.

He said to take the reader with you – show them what you see in both the big picture and the detail.

It’s great advice and has served me well.

I see far to many shots of some guy holding a fish and a rod with little else, yes you need a shot like that, but also the landscape, the weather, the tackle and the atmosphere.

    Great shots BTW..

    It’s a nice shot.

I like the crop that Aarons done – makes everything a bit more tidy and brings more focus to the dog and angler.

I love my Blads as well and can’t bring myself to sell them.

    BUT –

I wouldn’t bother with one of the medium format systems now, they’re a very slow & painful way to shoot when compared to my Canons.

Plus the price when compared to function is WAY out of whack.

Landscape shots from the digital backs at that resolution are awesome, but I wouldn’t want to do fishing stuff with one..

    Australia is a dangerous place..

Here you’re part of the food chain not just an observer.. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I think that’s why a lot of us go to UnZud to fish – no snakes or dangerous spiders, no crocs, no killer jellyfish and no annoying flies..

Sure, the people there aren’t very good looking, but the landscape makes up for that.. ;D
