Here in Oz we do very well off the back of coal and iron mining amongst others, and to be sure, it can be a messy business so I would be a bit uncomfortable with jumping on a high horse about the environmental impacts vs. social benefits.
I doubt much of the coal we export goes to clean & green power generation.But –
It’s fairly obvious to me that the mining industry needs firm regulation and not everywhere there is wealth in the ground is suitable for mining.
I also think, as consumers, we’re out of control and could spend

HI Tim,
A winter trip to the Tongariro river in Turangi during the spawn run can be awesome.
There’s also a lot of great smaller streams in the area where you can get BIG trout in the right conditions.Lake Taupo is also a great trout fishery.
Turangi is about 4 and a bit hours from Auckland.
You will find New Zealanders, though hard to understand with their very strange accents and not easy on the eye are very friendly and helpful with the fishing.

Can you please pick his brains about what’s coming out next, and thank him for doing the ZXL’s in a 2 weight – it’s the best light rod I’ve owned and easily the pick of the light Sages.
The SLT #2 would have been a very hard act to follow as it’s such a brilliant stick.He also needs a pat on the back for the TCX 5 because it’s got so much power, yet is quite user friendly an forgiving – an amazing design.

I like the tight framing on the cheetah kill and the stone olive, the light on everything, and the way you can just see the lion in the night shot – I would have shit myself as well.. ;D
The only negative I would add, is the slightly cropped feet of the pig looks a little sloppy.
My favorite shot is the Vultures..

Mike, I’ve used the 500 a few times (borrowed off Canon ;)) and it’s an awesome lens.
Also worth a look if you want to do wildlife stuff is the 400 5.6 – it’s slower by a stop, but saves about 5000 $$ and is much lighter..

Here’s a couple of samples of backgrounds I like that frame the subject.
This is using the weight and darkness of the clouds to create a mood.
And this one is hot with the background blown a bit to make everything a bit airy.
Both shots would be different if I followed the rule of thirds exactly.

I like to think about composition in terms of how your eye might wander around the frame.
For example, I think in the boat shot and with the chicken I would have put the subject more to one side.
With the anglers shifted to the left of the frame and the chicken to the right.
This would make you follow the subject eyeline.Composition is very subjective of course and it’s easy to comment from a distance.. 😉

In my 20 year experience, doing things for exposure is a risky business.
I’ve found, on average, that if you shoot for nothing for someone, you’ll find it hard to ever get money out of them in the future.Photography is both expensive and undervalued at the moment due to digital having made it so accessible for so many and it’s important that everyone, be them pro or weekend warrior work towards the image maintaing it’s value.
IMHO anytime an image is used anywhere, the photographer should be paid something, even if it’s not a huge fee.My fear is that current practice of things on-line not being valued will be a disaster in the future when all publications and books might be on-line.

Seriously, after a recent scare where I lost some VIP raws from a BIG shoot for a new client, my working life flashed before my eye’s and I’ve had a tighten up of the system.
Turns out I had the ‘lost’ raws on a TB drive, but it was at my wife’s computer because she had to find an older shot while I was away on a job.
So what I need to do now is go through all the drives and label them and maybe list the dates of the back-ups so It’s more clear if one is missing because they mostly all look the same..
Man, this is going to get messy when in a few years.. 😉
