MemberCorey, that bully ate a white/tan double bunny and gave me quite a tussle on a 5-weight. Good luck up there, the local guides said the cutty fishing would be heating up in a couple of weeks.
Nice .. Thanks man. I am thinking I may forgo tossing hoppers much and mainly hit it with a sink and streamers! 😉 Looks like a blast on a 5wt!

MemberWill, Fantastic thread and great shots! Personally, I’d enjoy seeing a couple more environment shots mixed in with the stunning macros. Maybe a shot of a big hatch on the river .. or a fish coming up after one of the bugs .. or, even one of those bugs on a anglers hat. I’m guessing that your intent wasn’t “fishing”, but it would help to keep my interest level in the ‘story’. 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
I have had a particular photo essay in mind for a about a year now. I have started putting together my locations and contacting some relevant people … So, hearing everyone’s thoughts has inspired me to really get organized about my approach …
First thing — Print and put visibly in truck as a reminder “Take the reader with you – show them what you see in both the big picture and the detail.”. Thanks David, that is good advise!
Next .. I think will actually make a “storyboard” of shots I am looking for and try to envision exactly what I want to present. Hopefully, I wont loose any of the spontaneity.
Zach and the other writer/photographers … I’m sure this is a cart and horse type of question, but … I’m curious, do you mainly write your story around the images that you have brought back .. Or do you mainly supplement your writing with the images that you shot? Let me guess, lots of both…

MemberCool shots/editing. I like them, but I’m a big fan of editing a shot to how it “felt” to me at the time vs. keeping it strictly visually accurate. I always debate with myself about how far to go with photoshop. The funny thing is that I get more positive responses to my more ‘chopped photos. The other thing I always wonder is how commercially viable heavily photoshopped images are. ? I am guessing not very.

MemberSuper nice macros! I like the addition of the added water line and plant life. IMO it does help to draw you into the photo and creates a nice setting for the nymphs.

MemberGreat shots .. Super sharp and crisp. I agree, and like the depth that the background gives the first shot.

MemberLOL .. Nice! That one made my monday.

MemberCool. Funny you mention the UW shot. One of the guys going is known on another board for his UW shots of trout and macro shots of the fishes eyes. I told him he should leave the UW shots to someone else. I am picturing a shot of a Mako’s eye from like ten feet away. ;D
LOL .. Man if he has a better underwater setup than i do (optio W20). He should take it along. That optio has such a lag that it was hard to get a good shot. An UW shot of a mako eyeballing or taking a fly, would be fantastic! The teaser in my shot is pretty cool, but a take on a fly would be waaay more cool. imo 😎
I am sure the Makos are more exciting to catch and all. It’s just that Blues are about the most graceful looking fish I’ve ever seen. And the deep blue color is incredible. I’ll have to link this for my friends to check out. I am sure it will get some juices flowing for their trip.
I agree! Blues are stunning! Looking forward to hearing how your buddies do and seeing some pics! Be sure to post an update after they go.

MemberDarrin: Thanks .. Your friends will have a ball! Hands down one of ( if not the ) best FF experiences I have had. Thanks for the compliment on the pic of the blue.. It was a little unnerving to put my hand underwater with agitated sharks, but you only live once, right? There were blues around and they wanted to take the fly, but Conway wanted us on the makos!
Zack: Thanks! Those sexy sharks make it fun!

Membercoincidentally ran across this video (Robert Clouser tying his fly) on another forum today … http://link.brightcove.com/services/player/bcpid1388782531?bclid=1388771184&bctid=1348305503 … video of

MemberAwesome stuff! Great pics. I Have only read about it, Looks like a blast .. Thanks for sharing!

MemberThanks Aaron! Yeah, it was a seriously cool trip! It was my first real salt water experience and it’ll be hard to follow-up .. The makos are unbelievably beautiful and powerful creatures. The takes were slow, intentional, and purposeful. The runs were over the top fast and strong. On top of all that, you can tell that Conway loves being there and he was absolutely fantastic!
edit: If your interested, there are a few more pics on my flickr stream .. I didnt want to flood.

MemberGreat! Thanks for sharing .. I am really looking forward to hitting some smaller water this year! THAT looks like a ton of fun!
