I am visiting Fernie. BC right now and thought I would share a disappointing experience from yesterday and see if anyone had any ideas or has been in a similar situation (the card problem not the fishing problem…lol). I spent yesterday morning fishing the Elk River with my brother in law and landed several nice Bull Trout (a first for me). We snapped off a bunch of photos and were eager to see them on the computer when we got home. We looked at them in the field and all was fine. I use a Express Card Reader to transfer the images from my CF card to the MacBook Pro through the PC slot. Well to get to the chase, the computer would not recognize the CF card, when I put it back into the camera the camera will no longer recognize it either, it just gives me an error message. It appears that the place where the CF card plugs in (on the card itself) is damaged and cannot be recognized any longer. Can anyone recommend a data recovery company who may be able to save the images? Would transferring the files directly from my camera be a better idea? It would be much slower, but I would not have had this problem, as it looks like the “pins” on the card reader were bent and damaged the card.

Thats a shame Scott. If the pin receptacles are damaged such that neither your card reader, or body will recognise it I don’t have the foggiest as to what you can do. I would suggest trying the card manufactorer, maybe they are aware of something.

This is HIGHLY unusual, CF is one of the most rugged forms of storage there is..  does the card slide in easy?

Usually what the CF card plugs into gets damaged.. not the card… the card is “female”…

I would get a very bright light source and see if you can see anything in the pin slots in the CF… the contacts in there can get crud in them… I always carry mine in my pocket… but lots of folks caution against this as pocket crud can cause issues (I just have really clean pockets! 🙂

Is it a name brand card?

Did the Mac try to mount it as a disk?

Does the card look physically damaged?

Thanks guys. It appears that the Express Card got damaged (i.e. one of the pins got bent) and that in turn damaged the CF card over time. Which as it turns out damaged the pins in the camera CF slot. Luckily, I used a small screwdriver and bent back the pin in the camera and got another card to work. Got a few good shots today, but the images of a large Bull Trout are on the damaged card

As long as the card itself isn’t damaged the data can be pulled off… when you crack the case on CF you notice the string of leads that plug into the pin slots…

Turns out the files were corrupted (I guess). I contacted SanDisk and the suggested I try running a program called Photorecovery on it. To my surprise I got the images back. Although the images are not the best quality (my fault), I did get them back to show my buddies. Here is the Bull Trout photo I really wanted back:

Thanks labrati and John Bennett for the help.

My SD card I used on my HP iPaq (a PDA) got corrupted. It’s not pictures, but files used on the PDA I can’t ‘see’ anymore.

Anyone an idea how to resurrect the SD? I really would like to get a couple of files back…. 🙁

Corey, that bully ate a white/tan double bunny and gave me quite a tussle on a 5-weight. Good luck up there, the local guides said the cutty fishing would be heating up in a couple of weeks.

Jay, here is the link to the software that I used as recommended by SanDisk. They appear to have photo as well as other data recovery software available.

    Good luck with that too!
