John BennettMemberDecided to start playing with some *cough* advanced *cough* stuff.
Mostly filter techniques and colour cast.Up first were a bunch of pics Id normally not give much effort to. In other words either uninteresting, or exposer problems and likely headed to limbo and ulitimately the trash bin 6 months down the road when I weed them. Alot of these originals have crazy haze in them as only seen in the dog days of summer.
Colour contrasting coupled with polarization. Orignal was little more than a haze filled shot, compounded by atmospheric interference one gets with telephotos

Graduated ND and a smidgeon of vignetting

Center lighting coupled with moderate vignetting

Graduated ND in post

Another Grad ND done in post.

Split ND and sunlight (warmth) added. Original was very flat in the sky and dock.

In time when I get a better feel for applyng some of these effects I’ll try some on my better stuff.
Thoughts?
Also think its time to calibrate my monitor. really see a difference in these between home/work, probably due to extra intensity in some.Jul 8, 2008 at 2:27 pm #63855anonymous

John BennettMemberBeen playing with black and whites to :). Mostly with high/low contrast scenes. Still havent hit on anything I really like as yet.
NDs, yep plan to add one (graduated) , sometime later this year. Have a bunch of RRS hardware still to acquire first.
Problem Im having there is “envisioning” pre shot when its really going to help. Blown or washed skies are an obvious time to add one and then adj as needed for the lower tones/foreground. Also their pretty “cumbersome” having to add the rig before hand and were something to “present” itself your in no position to take advantage. Which has happened more than expected when using my CP.
But starting to play withJul 8, 2008 at 4:35 pm #63857anonymous

MemberCool shots/editing. I like them, but I’m a big fan of editing a shot to how it “felt” to me at the time vs. keeping it strictly visually accurate. I always debate with myself about how far to go with photoshop. The funny thing is that I get more positive responses to my more ‘chopped photos. The other thing I always wonder is how commercially viable heavily photoshopped images are. ? I am guessing not very.

John BennettMemberIm guessing not very Corey, atleast within limits.
To some degree I’m sure they can be. Is an image thats taken with a ND any less manipulated than an image where ND is applied in post?
If so, where is the line drawn?
Why is it ok to ramp up contrast and saturation to almost unnatural levels but not….ANyways thats a debate I dont think either camp can win.
Heres a wildlife shot thats I’ve “manipulated” via filters in post this evening. This is pretty cool stuff, Imhaving some fun wit it.
