Yes!  What a great post, Joel.  I haven’t read the whole novel yet; just looking at the pictures though you can tell this was an amazing trip.  And I must compliment you on your photos – excellent job throughout with some great stuff in there.

I have to point to one, however:

Simon!  I really appreciate you representing with the IA tee shirt.  I am just not quite sure how to feel about what you covered it up with.   😀  Hahahahah.

Joel I saw another IA shirt in there as well as a Fiberglass Manifesto shirt.  Well done indeed!

    Zach

Yeah Simon… and they critisise my fashion sense… you been hanging with Tripney too long 😀

    Great Report Joel.

On my freshwater setups I don’t use braided loops at all… Nail or needle knot mono butt section to all lines. With the long leaders we often use in freshwater in NZ (Often up to 18 feet) loops are a pain in the butt… pardon the pun.

however I use braided mono loops for near every connection on my saltwater rigs(except on my rio lines which have welded loops already). I am sure if you look in the video section of this site you’ll find Zach has some footage of this very subject and there is also some great info on Peter Morses http://www.wildfish.com.au site under tackle and techniques.

Those are really cool flies, Clark.  I also like the ‘miscreant’ title. 🙂

    Zach

Thanks Zach. The title…. It’s appropriate, trust me!

    Hey Clark!

We arrive in Christchurch on Saturday the 28th at 7:35am and head to Lake Tekapo from there. We are spending a couple of days there and fishing with Simon on Sunday and then off to Wanaka on Monday. We will stay there until Wednesday then it is off to Te Anau. On Thursday we drive to Milford and Friday down to Lumsden to hook up with Simon again to fish on the weekend. Monday and Tuesday are open at this point and Wednesday the 8th we fly out of Christchurch at 5:30pm.

That is the schedule Clark. I would love to hook up and fish if it works out. Just let me know.

    Joel

Dammit!!! You’re on the wrong Island dude!!!

Clark are those bugs going to still be tempting fish when I am down there at the end of March? I could tie that thing to look like a hopper for the waters around here in Montana! Great bug!

    Joel

Some would sazy no, but I’d still be using them.

Where are you going to be? Would love to hook up for a fish if possible?

Well it’s a general Terrestrial but works on Cicada feeding trout. The “Clark’s Cicada”, as proud as I am of it, is now so much in common use fish in heavily fished areas some trout shy off the commercially produced ones… so this is an alternative that incorporates the same triggers with a few differences and is easier to see on faster water. It also, I hope, shows off how my flytying has evolved since 1991 when the “Clark’s Cicada” was created.

I’m not sure how an Aussie saltwater guy would fish them neal… you’d have to ask Morsie  ;D

I’m a New Zealand Saltwater guy who guided on our trout streams for 25 years before I became a “Salt guy” LOL

There’s no “industry standard” for declared breaking strains.

I remember having a conversation with Dennis Black, the founder of Umpqua Feather Merchants, about this many years ago. He claimed, and he never BS’d me about anything else I’m aware of, that some will test the breaking strain, let’s say, 10 times. The highest figure it breaks at becomes their stated breaking strain. Some will use the lowest and some will use the average.

Dennis said they always used the lowest and he believes it is why, for many many years, they had the lion’s share of the tippet material market.

No doubt others will share some views on that.

These days i primarily use Rio and when not available I still use Umpqua. I love the feel of frog hair and like the way it knots, but it doesn’t seem very strong to me compared to my favored materials.

Well, they held this casting shoot out… Paul Arden, Chase Jablonski and a few other FFF Masters…

I stepped up and simply wasted their ass…. They couldn’t get within 20′ of me… I was awesome….

OK, so that’s crap…  I paid $2.00 in a raffle and won that and packet of crimson barred marabou…. 😎
