chris zandoMemberGot a chance to cast the 5 weight today and really liked it, a bit surprised as a Winston/Sage guy traditionally. I was using a triangle taper line which was good but wondering what lines you guys have used on this rod. Maybe a GPX?
chris zandoMemberAt the end of the day fish the rods that give you joy, if they cost $200 or $800. I am a rod junkie so get a lot of satisfaction at checking out the new rods and new technology. Agreed much of it is marketing muck but this is fun stuff. We are not talking $30K bass boats here!!
chris zandoMemberAs a rod junkie I have cast them all and settled on a BIIIX 5 weight as my wading rod and a new Sage One six weight as my drift boat rod. I think both of these rods are at the cutting edge of technology bewing super light and as Zack described they bend very deeply but recover very fast. I picked up an old CP after casting the One and it was like using a cell phone from 1990.
Perhaps most casters cannot take advantage of the technology but that is the same as every industry.
chris zandoMemberHeard from a huge Sage dealer that the BIIX was so successfull that Sage specifically designed the Z Axis with that in mind (which has an action not all that dissimilar). The BIIX was a huge hit and one of the first rods to be super light and smooth with power to cast close and far. In my opinion started the trend for rods that bend a bit deeper in the blank.
On a related note, own a few Z Axis and love them. I have fished the a Sage One demo on a few occasions and while a nice rod just doesn;t seem to have any magic in it. The BIIIX on the other hand I really like.
chris zandoMemberI think Winston has done a great job with using boron and lead innovation in the past ten years. The BIiX led to the Z Axis and now the BIIIX that I think feels so much better than the Sage One.
Not sure Winston gets enough credit for creating a rod with feel and power with their boron rods.
chris zandoMemberThanks, what did it “fix” versus the Mastery Distance line?
chris zandoMemberSimm is the Apple of flyfishing, they simply make the best & most innovative products!
chris zandoMemberTo me these shoot-outs are a great way to spark debate and are a lot of fun in the dead of the Winter. Reminds of the BCS debate in college football.
Personally the way a rod feels is hard to quantify. For example the shootout loves the Z Axis and I have owned two and sold one. For me the Winston BIIX and BIIMX are so much smoother and in the case of the BIIMX more powerful. For me the Winstons and I would throw in the Scott g2 have that whole “soul” thing going on.
chris zandoMember1) My beloved Irish are slowly getting better, Kelly has not been great on gameday but I will withhold judgement until he has a few years
2) LSU has flat out athletes on their defense
3) Love to see Florida lose
4) Alabama may still have a place in the national championship game
chris zandoMemberGo Irish!
chris zandoMemberZack,
I am the proud owner of a Clacka and tell you that I have personally have beat the heck out of it with no issues. On the Upper Delaware system I would say 90% of the guides have Clacka’s. They really track better than the rest of the market.
Thanks
chris zandoMemberZack,
I figured you would know the inside scoop. What I heard what they took the BIIX and just beefed up the mid and butt sections a bit but not a radical new design.

chris zandoMemberNew Lower Price $350 plus $15 shipping
chris zandoMemberThe rod is factory and I am the original owner. This is a 4 piece rod with original rod and tube.
chris zandoMemberI second ZipCast, great stuff!
chris zandoMemberI am wearing a pair of them right now and can say they are the best and most comfortable pants I won (I have 4 pairs).
chris zandoMemberI have a 9′ 3 weight Z Axis that I fish with a wf-4 and it does everything from dries to small streamers! It will protect a 7x tippet but can cast 75 feet of line.
chris zandoMemberWaterworks/Lamson- Agree the website needs a facelift but regarding Waterworks side of the shop I think you are way off. The Waterworks guys bought Lamson because they needed a brand and has provided all of the innovation. Waterworks is their elite brand at this point.
Winston- incredible site for Greenheads like myself! Where can you discuss every indiviudal rod in a series and get 20 responses? Huge move for Winston to create a Forum section to re-enforce the addiction people have to the “green”. Sage would do well to follow.
chris zandoMemberNeal,
What 4 weight Z Axis do you have? I have a 9′ 3 weight Z Axis, a great rod by the way, and am thinking of the Tibor in moss green!

chris zandoMemberZack,
Did you have a chance to see the new Winston MX’s? Thanks
