chris zandoMemberAll I know is that his flyshop goes out of its way to tout the BIIX a few years ago and now it apparently is not a great rod. The Z Axis wins, a new rod in 2007, does not seem like conicidence. The whole thing is a total scam……….
chris zandoMemberTo finish on the original topic, I think the Z Axis will be loved by some and scorned by those who like a fast stiff rod. I still think Sage took the BIIX into consideration given its incredible popularity. One shop I know well told me they were outselling BIIX’s 2 to 1 over Sage in the last few years.
Nice rod and I may buy one but will to cast more. I am suprised their has not more talk on the boards on these rods.
chris zandoMemberZach,
To clarify, you are saying the BIIX does not perform well at distance but you mean at serious distance like over 100′. This would not be the BIIX’s forte for sure. But will the BIIX cast 80′ with a minumum of effort? I would say yes and anything beyond that is not really fishable. Similar to your G2 the Winston’s are made to be fun for the caster and feel a fish make a run. So I think it is fair to say that if you are a at a casting contest reach for the Sage and on a Spring Creek the Winston.
The other thing I have notcied is that the BIIX’s fish one size smaller, meaning the 6 wt feels like a 5. I actually fish a 7 weight that I think makes the perfect 6 weight rod.

chris zandoMemberPancho,
I have stayed at the Rusty Parrot 3 years in a row and it is one of the finest hotels anywhere……absolutely first class!

chris zandoMemberZach,
You are killing us gear junkies. How about a more in-depth review of the new Sage rod?
1) What model did you cast?
2) Was it lighter than the XP, smoother, more powerful?
3) What does it look like?
4) is it more like the TCR or the SLT?
Personally I think the Winston BIIX with a bit more umph/stiffness would be the perfect rod!
chris zandoMemberZack,
I was in Yellowstone in July and am amazed every time I go there. Did you have any luck on the Yellowstone river? I went to Buffalo Ford for the first time and saw many gray drake spinners and PMD’s but no fish. On a brighter note, I fished Depuy’s Spring Creek for the first time and am hooked for life!

chris zandoMemberTo be fair to Winston, the BIIX has been a huge success in the marketplace. I own three and feel that aside from the 9′ 4 weight they are the best rods out there. The 6 weight feels like a 4 weight and is a great overall trout rod with feel and power.
A flyshop owner who is a friend dropped Scott and tells me that the BIIX’s outsell the Sage 3 to 1 on a big tailwater.
chris zandoMemberDunfly,
Why does line speed get increased by so much if the rod does not load deeper? Is it simply pulling on a moving object to make it go faster?

chris zandoMemberJust curious are you using a distance line the Mastery XXD to get out that far?
chris zandoMemberPicked up “Pale Morning Done” and read it cover to cover. Best flyfishing story since the one they made the movie about.
chris zandoMemberZack,
Thanks for the response. I should state that I am 6′ 3″ 205 and 34 so I am pretty strong right now but I am sure my body will break down. Here is one issue I think may be a result of my technique:
I have not really mastered the double haul at this point. However, when I have wind in my face I can double-haul very strongly. Could this be caused by too much wrist on the backcast?
