Chad SimcoxMemberWow thanks Neal, very cool! I’m thinking the warmth of the afternoon light is a key to this look as well. Then again it’s all about the subject. Out on the open water or salt flats I think morning light would work best.
With the blacks crushed, high saturation and high contrast it really has the feel of Corey’s shot. Crazy, cool colors come through on the dogs coat! I dig it. Now I can’t wait to see what you do with a full size camera.By the way, talk about inspiring, everyone make sure you check out the may slideshow over at http://www.flyartstudio.com

Chad SimcoxMemberThanks Corey, what a wonderful compliment!
I think what makes this technique so successful is the fact that it provides atmosphere to the image giving it more feeling. It’s that sense of “there’s something in the air”. By leaving the blacks a bit washed out and the contrast somewhat low you’re able to give volume and presence to the air.http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberHere is another non-fishing related photo using that effect. I did a portfolio shoot 2 weeks ago, this is one of the selects. I wanted to show how this technique still works with a cluttered background. Again, shooting into the sun with the sun low on the horizon, exposing for the foreground, and intentionally blowing out the sky.
I don’t know about you, but photos like this transport me to the time of day and help me feel the warmth of the sun, the slight breeze and the oncoming coolness of night. Perfect way to convey summer afternoon.
*by the way, I removed 10 people from the background of this photo!

Chad SimcoxMemberLove the 3rd shot. Could use a bit more contrast to really make the colors pop, but the photo is great. I don’t think I’d get in water that is green like in the first shot, gross. At least not without getting hepatitis shots first! Though it does look like a cool place to paddle through.

Chad SimcoxMemberCorey, i really like that first shot. A bit too contrasty with the crushed blacks for me, but still looks great. Have you tried seeing how that one would print? I’m just curious as to how it would come out with the blacks being so heavy.
Will that mayfly shot looks great!

Chad SimcoxMemberWow, looks like a great trip, wonderful photos to remember it by. You really captured some great landscapes and lifestyle shots. I’d be proud to have those shots in my portfolio.
*note to self, buy some grad filters, a wider lens and move back to the Rocky Mtns.

Chad SimcoxMemberOh, also with Nikon, I believe their older lenses have the same mount as the new ones, so you can get a used high quality manual focus lens pretty cheap. Canon changed their lens mount so you can only use their modern lenses.

Chad SimcoxMemberCole, You probably won’t outgrow a camera too quickly, instead you’ll want to upgrade your selection of lenses. There are people making amazing photos with Canon Rebel cameras and high end lenses that will blow away photos coming from a 5D with lower quality lenses. So it’s not about the camera so much as it is about the glass (lens) on the front of it.
If you’re just starting out, you’re not going to miss features that you never had in the first place. Just figure out what you actually need and then find a camera that fits those needs. You’ll probably have to make some compromises when fitting your budget, but that’s how it is.
My camera body choice was made on frame burst speed, high ISO expansion, noise handling at high ISO, how the camera felt in hand (I like bigger/heavier cameras), durability, MP size (at the time it mattered), and of course price range.

Chad SimcoxMemberI’m a sucker for photos that can transport you to a place where you can hear the birds and bugs, and feel the morning mist on your face. I’ll selectively omit being able to feel the back flies…
Great shots! I love the first morning canoe shot and the landscapes.

Chad SimcoxMemberWith any of the current SLRs they won’t be out of date within the next 6 months or even 6 years most likely. I am using Canon 20D and 30D. The 20D is 4 years old and is still a fine camera and has high enough resolution for me to make a 8×10 print with no problems. The only thing that would be out of date is me wanting more features. Hell my Graphlex 35mm rangefinder from 1956 isn’t even out of date at this point! Until film goes the way of the Dodo, it will still be relevant.
If I were just getting in to shooting I’d probably look at Nikon. I’m a Canon shooter myself, but have recommended Nikon to friends and they have been more than happy with the cameras. The reason I say Nikon, is because their quality lenses seem to be cheaper than Canon’s. To be honest, I would probably just look at those 2 manufacturers because they have the track record that gives an indication that their systems will still be around in 10 years when you do move on to other camera bodies. Go to a local camera shop or two and test out both manufacturer’s cameras that are in your price range. Find out which feels best in your hand, which controls you like best, etc.

Chad SimcoxMemberYeah Ben thats a funny one. I read it somewhere else recently too. Sad thing is, the original offender didn’t know he was in the wrong to begin with.
I will say that the company I used to work for (which has since folded in the recession) had the policy of using images off the internet which were not licensed. It made me sick every time I had to do it, and thought about informing the photographers but unfortunately I didn’t always have their name. Unfortunately I never did…http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberYep unobstructed magic hour light. You’re not going to want a lot of trees or buildings cluttering up the background. Works great on open water, beaches, meadow streams…

Chad SimcoxMemberA good friend of mine has the RED one camera and it’s great. I’ve seen mixed results from it due to lens choice, but I’m convinced it’s a great camera and can’t wait to see the next round of cams.
It’s well known that there were a lot of issues with the software builds on the camera when it was first released to the public. But thats part of what makes this company so great. They get the product into the hands of the people to do the testing and then take feedback from users to make changes/upgrades or address issues that arise in the working world. And the price may be steep, but it’s nothing compared to the cost of a high quality new 35mm camera package! Then you have to buy rolls of film and pay for processing on top of that.

Chad SimcoxMemberGreat looking photos everyone. I love the look of shooting into sun. I like to use no fill and expose for the shadow side of back lit faces/objects. It blows out the sky, but thats the look I love so much.
Here’s one of mine from a recent trip to Ecuador. On the beach at sunset, exposed for the shadows, slowish shutter to get a little bit of motion blur.

One of my favorite photographers (Nick Onken) does that look a lot and has really gotten me interested in shooting that way.

Chad SimcoxMemberI use the Dekine Sequence pack. I love the pack. I can squeeze my 15″ MBP in behind the camera block, but it’s kind of a tight fit when I have lots of gear in there as well.

Chad SimcoxMembermaybe shoot with a longer shutter (in this case 1/125) and do some panning shots. Doubt they’ll be flying low enough to get anything in the background that would blur out, but it’s worth a shot.
Depending on the time of day you’re shooting, auto setting may give you silhouetted shots. If that’s the case, open up your exposure a few stops in order to bring detail into the planes. i wouldn’t worry about blowing out the sky.http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberTruth is, when you get your license you should be given a regulation book that informs you of the game laws. Therefore these people should have no excuse to not know what the law is.
Lee your logic may be accurate, but there are plenty of NGO programs to assist people in that situation.http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.
