John BennettMemberHope people don’t mind hashing this stuff out, I find it’s a great way to learn. Photography’s subjective (especially landscapes where people often play with light, tones, saturation etc) so taste vary and I personally like hearing them, its helps get a sense. If all I had was my family as souning boards every picture is an award winner 🙂 Â
Thats definately a result of the Blue/Gold CP Morsie and an aspect I haven’t mastered yet, although Im getting a feel for it.
The shot

Reality:
The sky was nowhere near that blue and the sun was just up (shot at about 6am). Techs are ISO 100, f13, 1 secondNor was the reflection in the water that defined or intense. But as you mentioned I was drawn by the clouds and layout and realised the B/G may be able to turn nothing into something.
Problem is when using the B/G, Â digital cameras can’t handle the colour play. It confuses the coding, so what you see when holding the filter to your eye (pre shot visual before screwing it on) and what you see through the viewfinder after adding it, are not what you end up with (a heavy magenta cast amongst otehr things).
So you have to try and recreate it at home by djusting WB and tint. If you look at the cloud reflection you can see traces of the magenta cast. Problem is in order to correct the WB you often need to drop the WB into the 3,000-3,600 kelvin range ( very, very cool intensifying the blues) and you need to correct your tint into the greens. Most sky shots Ive taken thus far look horrid and correcting the clouds is something I havent quite figured out yet.
The shot. This is closer to the effects I try to acheive

Reality: ISO 500, f13, 1.25 seconds
Overcast evening, dull grey sky, dull water, normally theres no shot. By adding the B/G CP where a normal CP would remove glare, this CP turns the area’s containing polarized light into either Blues or Golds depending on wich way you turn it..just like a normal CPheres an unedited RAW of essentially the same shot but with the CP dialed in to bring out the Blues, rather than Golds. As you can see and imagine theres nothing there but grey and very late evening light

As mentioned (imo) its a fantastic filter ( but it can be wonky and difficult to) and theres a learning process to it bt the rewards are worth it. If you want to see samples from someone whos mastered using it, check

David AndersonMemberAwesome shots everyone – you’re killing me here.. 🙂
Morsie, the bike is done with a 2400WS pack on full whack through an 8 foot softbox.
I think that’s about the same power as 15 on camera flashes.. 😀

MemberMost kind – it was my first time to BC, what a place. One of the only locations I have been lucky enough to have worked in that tended to look better the worse the weather got……………..I don’t feel I did proper justice to what I saw to be completely honest, and I would kill to go back there someday soon.

David AndersonMemberLauren, ‘Lake’ George is about 13 x 6 miles and was full about 8-10 years ago.
Even before the drought, it used to dry up every now & again seemingly without reason.

MemberG/day to the people of this board.
Have just bought my first dslr camera after watching Peter Morse show me some of his photographic magic at a recent conclave in Tasmania Australia.
I have a nikon d90 with a 18_200vr lens.
We had a magical sunset last night here in Myrtleford Victoria Australia.
Whilst driving along the road i had to take a photo, sorry about the powerlines but the sky looked amazing.
Any advice appreciated as i am here to learn

MemberMatt, We’re going to have to get together again soon, preferably with a bit of fishing water very nearby. The bottom pic could do with a bit of post adjustment, are you shooting in RAW or jpeg?
