I’ve had the urge to roll “old school” this fall so far. The last couple of trips up to North Carolina I’ve been using a Heddon Pal Pro Weight #8381 which is a seven foot rod for five weight line matched an old three inch J. W. Young Pridex clicker.
You’d be surprised how effective a tool a seven foot five weight fly rod is on small and medium sized rivers.
freeman…if you like the idea of fiberglass then I am sure that more than one person would have suggestions for you here…

Mike McFarland’s new webpage is up and his a lot of new configurations in the Spruce Creek (fiberglass) series out and coming out…including a several glass two handed style rods. He would build a rod for you in the Spruce Creek series to your exact line weight and length.
Steffen Brother’s will as well. They roll their own blanks and are very well thought off as far as rod action…but not so much on finish work of their rods.

Ummm…PM me if you have any questions. Fiberglass is about the most fun I’ve had with a fly rod in a long time. I think you would be impressed if “SLOW” is what you are after.
Sounds like you had a great trip. The North Platte is an amazing river. Having a boat is quite an advantage there. The photos of the UHaul and drift boat are priceless.
I agree with Hippie…30 mph winds on the North Platte is barely a breeze. PoudreRiver, our friend Dave, and I took a trip back in 2005…and we just couldn’t catch a break. First time there, no boat, high water, storms daily, and wind up to 60+ mph on most days. It was brutal…but we still managed to catch some really nice fish. It is weird (read impossible) trying to cast into that much wind.

Unless I am wet wading in a pair of nylon pants I wear a pair of Patagonia Capilene under my waders.
The only thing I recently was a Cliff’s Outdoor Top Shelf, which can be used with any vise.
What a great place to keep hooks and flies you’ve tied in order until they make it into the fly box.
