Right on Simon, The ‘Good old Days’ were in fact real tough.

    No Poly’s

    heavy wool instead
    No Goretex

    Oilskins
    No Fluro

No soaking gut leaders to soften them
No Ipods & Gameboys to keep the kids occupied in the car while we fish

    Hey Joel,
What a great tale mate. well done.
Now you know why we Aussies head there as often as possible.

Simon is a wag hey , but as you say he is generous to a fault.

I was talking to a mate in Queenstown yesterday , and the warm sunny fishing is all but finished , morning frosts are becoming regular and wet wading is over for the season.

But the Mataura Mayfly hatch is in full swing most afternoons and the fishing has been excellent most days and I’m aldready planning next years raids across ‘the Ditch’.

    Well done.

Best advise I can give is “don’t go” – the rest of your fishing life will be ruined…….. ;D ;D ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜Ž ::)

    Morsie

Great advice from all…my fishing life is definately ruined….see my previous posts.
I will be there in Early March( see you then Si, I’ll call soon) so I may be able to send you a report.
One piece of advice not already offered……If you do hook up with Simon……..don’t let him drive……….you’ll never get further than the first bridge ๐Ÿ˜‰

Hey Mike, My parents are originally from Durban…
we still hassle mum by getting her to say ‘ you cawnt pawk your caw here’….my kids fall about laughing.

My father was actually born in a little town called Karabib between Swakopmund and Windhoek , he spoke afrikaans until they moved to Durban when he was 9, the same year he ever wore shoes ย for the first time…. not many trout in Karabib, thats why he always took us camping by a stream here when we were growing up…he always called anywhere with a stream ‘Paradise’…Thanks Dad ๐Ÿ˜‰

The Economy ….Here in Oz they keep telling us that we are somewhat better off than elsewhere due to the tighter banking regulations…..

But Housing approvals are at a 9 year low, Job vacancies are at a 5 year low with unemployment on the rise to a predicted 7% by the end of next year. House prices have dropped ย about 10%.
Our Dollar has fallen from $US0.98 to 0.65 in 4 months.
Thank God that it was @ 98c when I was there in July …phew….

BUT interest rates have fallen 2.25% in 6 weeks , Petrol prices have dropped by 30% , the Govt. is giving every family $1000.00 per child for Christmas ( lucky I have 6 ย :D) and EVERYTHING is on sale…….Including airfares to New Zealand

    Good One Daryl nice work.
A question for the counrty singin’, kingie fighting , Sage weilding Clark…. with small dries and spookie brownies, you talked about the shine off the tippett / leader material, have you ever had to resort to sanding tippett down to take the shine off it ??

Yes Neal that’s them. Flying Foxes we call them , fully grown they have a head about the size of a Chihuahua and a wing span of 2 feet.
So you can only imagine how much fruit a flock of 500 or so would eat in a night. Although we don’t have rabies here , these guys have bacteria in their mouths that can make their bite extremely dangerous.

    Hey Dazza,

I agree with Marc, now days when in the South Island I steer away from the ‘reccommended’ flies and give them something small & simple.
I hardly use a Pheasant tail or hare & copper nymph anymore and my go to nymph is size 16 dull green , no tail and a small brass wire rib.
It still looks like ‘food’ but nothing too specific.
The same with dries, I will go a size 16- 18 simple CDC

Hey Tim ,that’s very cool. Thanks for sharing.
We dont have any of that sort of water here and the nearest ‘steelhead’ are in NZ……

Its 90 degrees here today….not a snowflake in sight and we are gearing up to go ‘twigging’ in the mountains next week.

    Cool Brian…
I checked out your blog and was amazed that sitting here at my desk in OZ I instantly recognised the mountainside in the background of the shots of you and the big guy….. well done.
I fished that run & on down to the lake in July with only modest results, but I clearly remember the trees on the bank and the slip on the mountainside that forms the backdrop.
I guess it really sticks in my memory as we have nothing like that sort of landscape here and I really enjoyed the few days I spent on the Madison…….and you have brought it all flooding back…thanks

    What a great tale Zach,
I’m not sure that it could have happened at all here in Oz……
The Green, no guns, duck loving, treehugging whale savers here have ensured that shooting ANYTHING here in OZ is all but Impossible………….
Oh except Kangaroos of course …and wombats ….
You can also shoot ‘ferals’ like wild pigs ,dogs and foxes and trout

    Ha Ha……..
    I have a cunning disguise Si….. I’lll transform myself into a Kiwitroutbum……..

And he’s right folks not ALL NZ trout are big, but they are all beautiful

and most of them are smart.

This one saw Simon coming and was trying to look like a log ย ๐Ÿ˜‰

Talk soon Si, have fun in the Snow ย ;D
