Oops. My post should have read “all my carp fishing” not “all might…”

What I meant was that all of the carp fishing I’ve done has been of a type where I don’t think a two-hander would be a particularly good tool.

The stripers in Long Island Sound, where I fished, would follow herring up rivers, so much of the fishing was very repetitive “across and swing down…repeat until exhausted”, where a two-hander with true spey casts would have a lot of good applications.

I lived in CT until a year ago, and yes, you see it now and then, especially when the stripers come up the rivers.

    Hey!!!

The missing spur means that it was reared in a hatchery, then stocked in the woods earlier that day.

without the hassles of launching a knot through your guides at mach 5

When I use my shooting heads, the loop (or knot) is never inside the guides when the cast is made, so that’s never a problem.

Obviously, whatever one prefers is what one should use. To me, true (i.e. not integrated) shooting heads are just one more tool in the arsenal.

I’m with Randy.  By using a “fused” or “integrated” shooting head, you lose one of the great things about a shooting head set up: versatility (and economy…OK, so that’s two things).

I don’t find that a shooting head with the head and running line handle any differently from a “fused” system, provided that the ratio of head weight:running line diameter is the same.  (In my pairings, it’s often not, but when I want the shooting head to perform like a typical WF line, I can easily find a set up that will do that.)

My typical set up is backing…running line (which could me Suffix Elite mono, Froghair, Rio, or just the running line of some other WF line)…shooting head, all connected to each other by loop-to-loop connections.

Here’s a video showing some shooting head casting:

Andrew   –  No reason to apologize, I sincerely appreciate the thoughtfulness of your reply.  I was a part of a somewhat heated debate a decade ago on this exact issue and arrived at your same conclusion.
I think sometimes it’s hard for serious steelheader’s west coast and otherwise to deal with some of the nuances of the GL fishery…  you know like catching a dozen fish in a few hours effort.  However some other dudes seem to really appreciate it, you can swing fly’s with the two hander, have a shot at a 10+ pound fish and fish some “big” water.  It’s awesome IMO.
    Thanks for your thoughts,

One Man’s Wilderness is a great book.

If it doesn’t violate board policy, I’ll post a link to a thread on my local (Connecticut) fly fishing board that is more or less a long list of the books I’ve read recently, with short comments on each.

Unless I overlooked it, nobody has yet mentioned a pram.

    Wow, that’s a great boat.

In answer to those who asked if a novice can build a functional boat, the answer is yes.

Every now and then there is a post from russianbrides.com…

Can we get that service hooked up here, too?

in reply to: Leader Making #25331

I can’t tell you why the leaders work better – I rarely use a tapered leader for the fishing I do.

But, I CAN appreciate a well tied bimini !

Now living in Connecticut, doing post-doctoral research at Yale University.  Now I’m 10 minutes from large striped bass and bluefish, my primary targets these days.

We Connecticut striped bass fisherman are takin’ over this here site. 😉

Welcome Andrew. We ply the same waters (and boards).

    You!?

If I can bump this thread back up to “active” again…

I have to second “The Angler’s Coast” by Russell Chatham.

    Gary,

Are these stripers coming up river from the ocean, or are they land-locked fish?

    in reply to: Introductions… #25586

Welcome to the madness Doctor Drew!

More than a few wooden boat owners here. Throw up a photo of the pram if you get a chance.

I have some photos of the boat that I can eventually dig up.

Thanks for the tip Zach.  I’ll see if I can get an image to display properly via that route:

My best striper last year (38 inches).

Welcome…how you all that schooling with a young family is a mystery to me.

Anyway…thats one helluva bluefish!  Nicely done.

Most of the schooling was out of the way before the kids came, fortunately!

And the bluefish – it bent my hook, but fortunately, not all the way.
