    Gentlemen,

    Thanks again for the help.

    Nick,

Those are some nice pics.  I like the Partridge and orange fly.  What are the top two patterns?  They look like some real fish catchers.

    Thanks for sharing.

    Neal,

    Thanks for sharing the links.

in reply to: What can I tie using #58389

    Mark,

I have used dove feathers for Beadhead Pheasant Tail Nymphs.  The fibers of the tail feathers are not long enough to cover the entire length of the hook shank, but I had no problem tying in more fibers near the bead for the shell back.  I have not tested these flies, but I think they will catch a fish.  I tied them for bluegill so my flies don’t need to be that exact.

We have had a particularly cold January here in North Texas with very few fishing days.  I know it is nothing compared to people in the North, but it throws us all for a loop.

    Good luck,
    -Allyn

I lost my Brittany to old age in 2005.  Kaycee was a great companion and a good birddog, but he hated fishing.  That whole sitting still and being quiet thing was not for him.  Our current dogs can’t behave around the house, so forget about the creek or the lake.

I lost a gold pan with some gold dust in it on the Mibres River in New Mexico.  I know that is not fishing, but how many of you have panned for gold and found some.  I fly fished on the same hike so technically it counts.

I have found more plastic bags that I care to think about.  I have found them miles from the nearest roads.  Plastic bags are the real environmental threat that we can do something about!  That is a diatribe for another day….

I have also found men’s underwear (tighty whities) in some odd places including streams I have been fishing.  I don’t want to know why this is….

Wow Randy, that is a good list for Fly-Fishing titles on the Kindle.

I got my wife a Kindle for Christmas this year.  She likes it alot.  I read Superfreakonomics on it and like the idea of it.  I tried to find some of the fly fishing titles that I like to read and reread and was a little disappointed.  First of all, I had low expectations.  Secondly as you might have guessed, there was not a large selection.  I think that if you read best seller type books and can get used to the format, the Kindle is great.  I think that as more books are reprinted, that the selection will increase.  With the Kindle and the Nook you are buying the device and the bookstore, so you had better like Amazon or Barnes and Noble.

The ipad is interesting because of the web content.  I am a scientist (Geology), and many science articles are published in PDF format.  I assume that ipad can read those, because my mac computer can.  I like the idea of having my professional library that accessible.  The interface looks like my iphone, which is pretty straight forward.

All I know for sure is this a great time to be literate!

    Shane,

What part of the metroplex are you in?

in reply to: What new products does fly fishing need? #43720

    John,

I would second the use of a camelback.  I have done field work in New Mexico and Texas in the summer and it was a life saver.  Dehydration is a serious threat in Texas summers.  Drinking from the straw is much easier than a water bottle and you are more likely to do it.

I really need a way to store tying materials like feathers and fur.  I am currently using plastic zip lock bags with binder clips on the pegboard in what my wife calls the man cave.  My tying room got moved out to the garage when my 3 year old daughter got into the tying materials.  I have an air conditioned room off the garage that I have hung pegboard in, but I have yet to come up with a way to store all the stuff so that I can find it and see what I have.  I like having this problem, but I would also enjoy a solution.

Sometimes I forget the camera and the iphone camera helps me prove that I was fishing and caught something.

I like the feeling of safety with the phone, but I never count on it.  I always let a responsible person know where I am going and when I will return.  At least I hope my wife is responsible.
