Back in Atlanta from Troutfest. The festival was bigger this year and not marred by rain. I want to thank those of you who made it to my talk. I think Troutfest’s attendance was actually up. There were several newspaper photographers running around so I kept my camera in the car.
I also want to mention the CFR booth, specifically the section run by Abe Mathews, who I thought had a really cool idea: he set up a side-booth and asked people walking by to sit down and tie a pheasant tail for CFR. He probably had three dozen by the time I got there and added a couple misshapen ones. I just thought that was really cool and fun – almost all of us can throw a fly together for a good cause and they (Abe, really) provided the materials.
I also thought it was cool getting to meet Jim Casada – I have enjoyed his posts here and I admire his writing work. More manufacturers were present, including Simms (who ought to have been there last year). The only one I didn’t see was Scott, but I know they are having their national sales meeting out in Colorado this weekend and I think it’s all hands on deck out there for them.
If you’re considering going out tomorrow, be sure to drop by the CFR tying desk – I told Abe he needed a more obvious sign, because when I walked by I thought it was another demonstration tying desk.

Rob –
You do need to learn how to use aperture properly, but your D70 should still be able to meter and expose correctly even with an old lens.
I would set the lens to f/11 or f/16 while shooting outside if you can’t control the aperture.

I think that’s an interesting concept. I would probably draw up the progression like this:
(1) Learner. Fishes with others, who sacrifice their time to teach him to fish.
(2) Enthusiast. Fishes with friends when possible, alone when required. Lots of skills to learn so goes back and forth from learner to teacher. May teach others even when he has no idea what he is talking about (guilty – ask Lauren).
(3) Loner. Seriously getting good at this, feels inadequate about level of experience. Very results oriented; usually toward big fish. Will fish alone, or with others, but socialization takes a back seat. Uses terms like “tactical,” “game of chess” and “blood sport” a lot.
(4) Teacher. Spends a lot of time holding #1’s hand. Often buys a boat even when no one around him knows how to row. Generally glamorizes the struggle of (1)-(3), has forgotten how hard it was to learn to cast. If naturally patient or unusually well-married, stays here for life. Otherwise, see (5).
(5) Guide. Believes in the hooker’s adage: never give it away. Will probably give it away anyway because they’re usually still nice guys. Spends hours staring into mirror, practicing thousand-yard stare, cultivating facial hair. Typically refers to himself as “a turkey/elk hunter” rather than a fisherman.

Hey Chris –
If you’re starting from the beginning, hopefully you’re seeing a pretty decent increase in the production quality as you go along.
I am not an expert either but I’m going to guess a little later – c. 1920, Union City, New York.
That type of reel was production quality, meant to be mounted both under *and over* a rod, and would have held other types of line; not just fly line.
