MemberYes the bottom is glass and pulling it over rocks does exactly what you would expect it to do to Glass. I might also add it hurts like hell to hear the scratching sounds. It’s rated for a 15 HP and it runs fine in two or more. In all the Riverhawk is a fantastic boat for river fishing. I still have my Lowe aluminum which is also a fantastic river boat. It drafts a few inches more then the RH but can take more punishment.
Both the RH and Gheenoe are great boats. The RH comes in a wider config then the Gheenoe which is why I bought it. Gheenoe has been around for a long time and is really just finding its way up here. I know when I lived in GA 15 years ago it seemed like everybody had one. I can say with certainty that if you find either in a config that suites what you’re looking for, you won’t be dissatisfied. I had a 13’ Gheenoe that two people could stand up in and cast, in fast water.
Dan you are more then welcome to come along sometime and see for yourself how the boat handles. There are a lot of times when I head to the Caney after work alone and would love some company. Shoot me an email with a phone # if you’re interested.

MemberI used some 2mm foam cut baitfish shape and wrapped with Holographic scale stickers. I added rattles to the next one I built but it really added alot weight. I need to leave off the lead wraps on the next one with rattles. Also added a little stinger hook out the back for those short strikers.

MemberHere are the gill plates. Spend some time on this site Zach. Every big fish fly you could ever imagine is here.
http://members.ij.net/danscustomflys/FlyTyingBodyMaterial.htmlWhat about this one. I tied it on a 2/0 so it is bigger then it looks. It’s flashy enough to signal for help in an emergency too.

MemberYou better hurry and get those English made reels. The clicker can easily be removed.

MemberSea Ray Zach??????? are you gona to pimp the lakes or fly fish? I think you must have meant the Mako boat…
I really like the Mako at BPS but I might have to go with a Carolina Skiff if I bought another big boat. More real estate and less HP to move it.

MemberWith the motor up and loaded about 6 to 8″ thanks to the 60″ beam”. There is a bit of Hull slap when facing wind chop but overall it is a very stealthy boat. I would think this would be a marsh monster. I’ll be happy to test it on some Redfish with you anytime!

MemberMy only comment so far is they don’t have much fish catching appeal :P.
I was on the river again tonight from 3pm till dark with perfect generation, cloudy and foggy conditions. I saw several nice Browns chasing minnows on the surface but was unable to get one to take a fly. Then I was floating by a log jam and saw another nice Brown, 4 to 5 pounds, gently rise and take something off the surface. I casted to it and it slammed my fly but quickly spat it.Mike Anderson

I was not aware redington was a sponsor of Dan’s board. Sponsor or not, anybody who claims they can dunk that reel in Saltwater and put it away for a few weeks and expect it to ever work again is on Crack.BD
Yea, but after you go thru 4 $100 reels you start to wonder how much you saved.Mike Anderson
MemberI have a Reddington AL 5/6 that I bought new off ebay.
The good.
Its a heavy duty reel that if properly taken care of and never exposed to saltwater should last forever. One of the smoothest drags I have ever seen on a reel.
The bad.
Very heavy compared with Ross Evo. or Orvis BarstockIf submersed in water and left wet for a few weeks the bearings WILL rust. Mine did.
It is not a use it and put it away type of reel. It has to be maintained after each use where it comes into contact with water.

MemberThanks Carter. Some of them look like I might have been smoking something when I tied them. I mostly just sit down with an image of what bait it is I’m trying to pattern and just start trying stuff. I waste alot of time and make some damned ugly flies. Your topwater suggestion is a good one. I wish I lived close enough to fish more often then I do.

MemberHey buddy glad to see you up and about. Without a doubt this is hard fishing that leaves you feeling rode hard and put up wet. I had to clean the boat, cooler, gear, etc, this morning so it was only 2/3 over for me last night.
We did fly fish most of the time and I only insisted in pulling out the gear so I could motivate Zach to keep casting. Nothing like seeing a Striper caught to get you motivated. I really wanted you to get one on the fly but it was a very slow day and I think you might have been doomed from the beginning. Last weekend they were standing in line to attack our baits. This weekend it was hard work to just get the two we caught. Not that a 24 and a 22 pound Striper is slacking.
In all we caught lots of fish on the fly including Sauger. Anybody who knows will tell you catching Sauger on the fly is something you won’t do everyday. We could have trolled up some Walleye in the channel I think but Zach is a die hard caster so I didn’t even mention it.
The whole day I was reminding Zach to throttle back and reserve some energy for the late evening bite. I have to commend him, he stood on that casting deck and threw 425 on a broomstick with a boat winch for a reel all day!I enjoyed it and great shots as usual.

MemberThe silicone otter eggs are the best I’ve seen. I also made some hot glue eggs that look really nice and should last longer.
Man, this thread takes me back to a couple of weeks we spent on the Cumberland. I can almost smell that crisp fall air and feel the chill of hard frost in the morning.

MemberHmm I could have sworn I read about Skipjack being endangered so I did a little goggle and turned up this.
http://www.dnr.wisconsin.gov/org/land/er/factsheets/fish/Skpher.htm
Status: State Endangered (1989).
“Natural History: A migratory species, skipjacks assemble below dams in spring (probably in an attempt to return upstream from the gulf or the lower Mississippi to spawn).”
The skipjack is nearly extirpated from Wisconsin, along with the ebony shell (Fusconaia ebena ) and elephant ear (Elliptio crassidens), both state endangered mussels for which the skipjack is the sole host. Mussel larvae cling to the herring’s gills until they mature. Two additional mussel species use the skipjack as a host, although not as exclusively as the ebony shell and elephant ear. From the Minnisota DNR
Special Concern
Alosa chrysochloris (Rafinesque) — skipjack herringThere were many states up north with skippies on the list. I bet you had no idea you were treating an endangered species with such disrespect.

MemberI really don’t know the history of Skipjack but I think they came from the gulf to spawn and have since been landlocked by the dams. Hard to believe but up north they are considered endangered.
They look an awful lot like a ladyfish and for all I know could be one.
Stripers think of them as Prime Rib.

MemberIf you have a beater 6 or 7 wt with sinking line bring it. I’ll see if I can also get you a Sauger on the fly. I’m sure that would be a another first for you.
We will also be Skipjack fishing. If you haven’t done it before you’re going to have a freaking ball. These are basically little 1-3 pound Tarpon and they are there in the thousands. You will catch on almost every cast! What are you lining the 10 with?
Mike Anderson
MemberI always go with the lightest reel. Even if it means a China reel which is rare, but happened on my 1 wt.
The Orvis BarStock is the lightest reel I could find without spending $300 and IMO the best deal on a “lightweight” reel on the market. I own 4 of them along with 2 Ross Evo’s that are light but not cheap.
