MemberWhat does everyone think about the Reddington SVII reel?

MemberI have a Reddington AL 5/6 that I bought new off ebay.
The good.
Its a heavy duty reel that if properly taken care of and never exposed to saltwater should last forever. One of the smoothest drags I have ever seen on a reel.
The bad.
Very heavy compared with Ross Evo. or Orvis BarstockIf submersed in water and left wet for a few weeks the bearings WILL rust. Mine did.
It is not a use it and put it away type of reel. It has to be maintained after each use where it comes into contact with water.

MemberI’m definitely looking for a “use and put away” reel – I’m not into fishing all day and then cleaning my gear all night.
Looks like the BBS is about 3 ounces lighter – though it has the disadvantage of not being a large arbor reel. Also about $30 more expensive.
Hmm. If the Redington is maintenance intensive, that may make the decision for me – though I’d really prefer a large arbor reel.
The Ross Evo is not in consideration because I’m not willing to spend $300 on a trout reel.

MemberNice to see someone else who can admit that reel is a rusty piece of crap Mike.

The Itinerant AnglerI heard they ditched the Brakewater, which in fairness was usually the reel Dan was talking up, and everyone agrees it was the best of the bunch.

I was not aware redington was a sponsor of Dan’s board. Sponsor or not, anybody who claims they can dunk that reel in Saltwater and put it away for a few weeks and expect it to ever work again is on Crack.BD
Yea, but after you go thru 4 $100 reels you start to wonder how much you saved.May 29, 2006 at 2:44 am #11870Carter Simcoe
MemberWell there should be a thick vail of sarcasm cast over most everything I say.
I dunno, maybe i’m off but I thought they were always talking about this AL reel like it had the best drag since RuPaul, then giving you some fine print about scrubing it down with a toothbrush after every use…….

MemberThe SVII is a good reel for the price range, it’ll get the job done if that’s what you want to spend.

MemberI have no experience with that reel BD. However I do own a lot of mid priced reels in the $100 range. 2 you might consider are the Teton Tioga and the Ross flywater. Both have a maintenance free drag. I really like the Tioga. However I’ve only owned it a few months.

MemberAlso, like Zach said, if you’re doing a lot of big fish stuff invest in the best reel you can it will save a lot of grief.
Not a lot of big fish stuff – I’m mainly just looking for a trout reel for a 5wt. I’ve been fortunate enough to hit a few big trout each year with the 5, and maybe a carp or a good-sized smallie here and there, but for the most part it’s just average trout fishing with a little bit of warmwater every once in a while.
That’s why I’m sticking at the $100 price range – I want a decent quality reel, but it’s not like the drag is going to see regular action. To be blunt, it’s highway robbery if I have to pay $250.00 or more just to get a trout reel that won’t rust and fall to pieces if I get it wet. If I weren’t looking at fly fishing gear, I could get a $25.00 Quantum at Wal-Mart that would hold up better than that.

Memberbd,
For a 5wt set up for trout and the occasional carp and smallie like you want, the SVII will do just fine.

MemberI’m seriously considering it.

MemberYou better hurry and get those English made reels. The clicker can easily be removed.

MemberDon’t buy the hype – no real reason to go LA on a trout reel.
