Cameron MortensonMemberI realize this will be out of your $100 set vise budget, but I would recommend the HMH Spartan pedestal vise.

Member:DLook on ebay, you can buy a Danvise for $60 -$80. It is atrue rotary inline and easy to operate. See Hans Weilenmann’s review of vices and prices on VFS. Also Al Beatty has excellent rotary tying DVDs on his B.T.s Flyfishing site for $20 😮 “Tap her light and she’ll always be fresh “–<(*)))><{ Paddy

MemberI’ve never replaced my Apex Anvil vise, never had a reason too. Great for what I tie (mostly large baitfish flies). $100 msrp, comes with a base and a clamp, lifetime warranty………. I’d just get that and be done with it. Never found a hook to big or small for it to grab hold of and when its all tightened down nothing budges. Been using mine for several years now, not a single issue.
I’ve spent thousands of dollars on fly tying buts its going to take a lot to make me buy a new vice, and ‘they’ have tried to sell me everything under the sun. I’ve tied on almost every one of the major-player’s vices, nice stuff all around, but just not that much better for what I’m doing. Maybe if I was doing small, complex trout flies………. It will definitly get you started, if not more.
I’m pretty sure it was Zach who recomended it to me back in the day.

The Itinerant AnglerI actually think most of the vises on the market are flimsy for most tying purposes.

I personally wouldn’t waste my time with anything in the $200 category, but you have allready heard my recomendation.Jun 6, 2006 at 10:04 pm #55068greg mitchell
MemberI have an HMH spartan which is a great vise. But if I were doing it over I would have gone with the HMH Silhouette. At only about $90 it’s a great vise. Lifetime warranty, made in USA, etc.

MemberI really like my Renzetti Traveler. I liked tying on a Dyna King. Can’t go wrong with either.

MemberI don’t own a Peak vise but a friend of mine that owns a fly shop ties on a Peak. And he can obviously have/use any vise he wants.
