Thanks guys, the fishing was pretty good, the company was top notch and lower LA is hellish but that’s what keeps it special I guess. Lots of Katrina storm debris, abandoned stores and homes in the area. It really looks like a war zone down there. There isn’t much of anything to eat in the immediate area and what is there is risky. Todd got a bad case of monkey butt from eating at Waffle House, it was the only sit down place open…. Once you get out in the marsh though it’s a whole different world.

Travis that boat is one of the best fishing boats I’ve ever been on. How something that drafts so little can ride so good in heavy chop is amazing. Poling it was almost as fun as fishing from it. Will I own one in the future??? Yes.

To me the best thing about photography is discovering something in a photo that you’ve never noticed with the naked eye. That alone inspires me to keep at it.

The Sony is most likely all the Camera I’ll ever need.

Not to argue but I’ve been using the baitfishing line on my fly rod for many years now and I have absolutely nothing bad to say about it, nothing whatsoever. This year alone we’ve put over 50 twenty pound class Striper in the boat and three or four thirty’s using 20 pound Vanish as tippet. The Bass fishing industry that these conventional lines are targeted at is a much larger segment then the fly fishing segment. To assume that they would just put a line out that is inconsistent would be incorrect. Ever seen a multi million dollar tournament won using brand X tippet? IMO if tippet was that much better the Bass Tournament guys would be all over it and the tippet manufactures would be tripping over themselves to get it to the market.

    They bite!

Seaguar flouro or vanish in 2-20 pound tests. I don’t buy the waaaay over priced tippet spools and have never had anyone school me that was using them.

I wondered about the 99’s since there isn’t anything anywhere about them that I could find on the net. I got the 10wt TCX this year and I like it for pulling Stripers out of wood but I’m a bigger fan of the Xi2 action for casting all day. I’ll be ordering a couple Xi3’s next week to replace two that were stolen. Can’t decide on which two but I’m looking hard at the 11 and the 8.

The Sage boat bag will be in my boat as soon as they become available. Very nice!

Morsie how do you like the 6000 reels?

in reply to: A fair is a variable smorgasbord #68527

The Gravitron! Best way on the planet to rid your body of all that nasty greasy fair food. I just passed on the fair food and the gravitron all together.

Dave they were running some big Tractors but the Bluegrass show started across the way and I headed over there. I would have taken some photos of the band but they wouldn’t have turned out well because of all the vibration coming from both my toes tappin.

This lens is a 20 year old piece of Minolta G glass. It’s one of those lenses that does pretty good most of the time and really shines some of the time. I like it alot for lighting situations like this. I think it’d be a great lens for a sideline football game. Won’t be long and I’ll know!

Neal, no need for a ziplock that light is built like a tank.

I agree Zach I’m going to just get a couple of the really cheap wal mart headlamps with a switch. About $9 I think.

in reply to: Head Lamps – Advice #38321

I like one that has an on/off switch with a red LED option as well. Some of them you have to push four or five times to turn off, each push is a different light setting. It’s a pain when you just want a quick light. My next one will have a on/off switch.

How do you tie a size 22 tube fly??

in reply to: Podcast: Sage’s Jerry Siem – Tonight! #37841

And that’s the rub as I see it Zach. Some of us use these rods as tools and some use them as a show piece. Right now I have 3 Xi2’s 3 SLT’s, and one TCX, hanging up on rafters in my garage by a homemade rod hanging system that I made out of rope. I don’t stroke them, or wash them, or praise them, I fish them, and when I’m done I hang them up. They almost never see the tube or get broken down unless I’m on the road.

Weight isn’t a big deal to me. I’m using Momentum reels and throwing 350 grain lines. I’m not going to get bent out of shape over an extra half oz on my rod. I know of another company that cut all the “excess” weight out of thier rods lately too. I’ve seen two 10 wts broken in the butt section and heard of several others. Sure they cast great but if you actually catch a fish on one and you need to turn it, good luck. I’d love to get you out with the “traditional” rod casting all day and hand you a custom rod so you can feel the difference, really.

I’m not suggesting they should can the traditional rods but I wish someone would make a rod for the guys who care more about function then looking the part. I have had conversations with some very well know and talented rod builders and most all agree that ceramics make a better fly rod.

You can match them to the blank too 😉

in reply to: Podcast: Sage’s Jerry Siem – Tonight! #37836

Man I’d love to talk to that guy! Why Sage doesn’t make a 7-12wt rod with the new “fly rod specific” ceramic guides and tip tops is beyond me. Having built several rods with the ceramics and bought a few without I’ve fished the exact rods side by side. I’m 100% convinced that for casting big heavy lines and flies there is no comparison between the two. Hands down the ceramics cast better, strip smother, look better, they are as durable if wrapped right, don’t inhibit the rods action as much, and will last waaaay

Hey Bill that is a great site thanks for the link. Cheap prices for what looks like some killer big fly material.

I’d just tie up some grey/white

No complaint so far but I don’t usually slide it over rocks though. I’m usually on plane if I’m in skinny enough water to hit a rock, anything above 3”. Most rivers I fish are more gravel in the shallow water and gravel is no problem at all. Different rivers might present more of a problem???

I did have to put Teflon slides on the trailer to help load it in shallow water. Should have done that long ago anyway…

in reply to: Bass rods redux #36892

Just FWIW the Bass rods are made to be tournament legal, that’s why they’re shorter, other then that they aren’t any different then any other fly rod. The line configuration and the fact that Sage has matched the rod to the proper grain weight Outbound (shooting head floater) is what makes them cast so well. Like I said earlier you can do this with any rod above a 4wt. I guess fishing shooting heads is something a lot of folks don’t do…

in reply to: Bass rods redux #36883

Pretty sure the line is just a Rio outbound, prob a 230 grain floater for the SM and a 300 grain floater for the LM rods.

Learning how to match rods by grain weight and not what the box says is a big deal in getting the right line for each different action and rod wt. You can really dial in a rod by experimenting with different grain wts. Rio is great about listing head weights for most of the lines on their site.
