Member“I’ve heard through the rumor mill that Lefty Kreth (sp?) is a member of Spring Hill.”
Jeff you are correct as are the Becks. What’s ironic is Fishing Creek has always been their home waters. They live in Benton and have property on the stream. As Zach has pointed out, the issue of navigabilty is a tough one. Currently I’ve been polling some of the local historians in that area in order to try to determiine if the water was ever used as a source for commerce.

MemberTo answer your question Eric, yes, I would and will boycott anyone involved with this kind of operation. As Zach has mentioned, the key issue was one of navigability.

MemberMike just a note to say thank you for your posts/photos on this trip. I have enjoyed waking up every morning knowing these will be the first things I look at on the dreaded box. I had the good fortune to fish many of the streams in your posts this past July and you bring back some great memories. One suggestion, next time out, give the Ruby a try too.
Thanks Again,

MemberI had the good fortune to purchase a McFarland 7′, 3 piece, three weight last year. You will NOT be disappointed!

MemberSeafood I’m in Bucks County and actually there are a few places within an hour that aren’t too bad. E-mail me, (rjacobsen13 at comcast.net), and I’ll be happy to share what little I know. We also travel to Fishing Creek in Benton, 2 and a little hours from here. Good stuff. Mail me.

MemberI received BIIx 5 weight last year as a gift from my wife. The intent was to have it as a carry on for a trip to Montana. I typically like slower rods, (as Zach well knows), but this thing is awesome. It tracks well and is very forgiving, even to a bad caster such as myself. It’s currently line with a Rio weight forward and seems to like it. We return to Montana again this year and the Winston will be going along for sure.

MemberSeafood I also cannot open or view the photos. Please try again. If you’re ever in S.E. or central Pa, let me know. Perhaps we can wet a line.

Here you go!
Metolius Bamboo Rod and Fly Fishing Fair — Saturday & Sunday, July 21-22, 2007
The 6th Annual Metolius River Fly Fishing and Bamboo Rod Fair will be held on Saturday and Sunday, July 15-16 at the Black Butte School, in Camp Sherman. The two-day event will be hosted by Roger and Kathy White of the Camp Sherman Store. Visitors may talk with contemporary Northwest bamboo rod builders, view examples of their work, and have a rare opportunity to cast over 200 of these wonderful rods. Rods are available for purchase at the show, or special order your own customized rod. Contact: Camp Sherman Store, 541-595-6711 or e-mail: roger@campshermanstore.com.Rolf Jacobsen
MemberBryan is right about this link. You may wish to pose your question there. WARNING!!! Stand back after that. I would venture to say you may get more advice than you planned on. On the other hand, you may also get some builders to contact you. Good Luck!

MemberJoel while I’m a relative puppy at bamboo rods, I can tell you becoming proficient at the used rod market takes a great deal of time and research. In addition, with the advent of E-bay, the market values can change quite rapidly. An example is a Heddon #17, or Black Beauty. Five years ago this rod was bringing close to $1000.00. Today you can easily cut that in half.
Your idea of having a few new rods on hand for customers to try may be a little easier to implement. Sweet Grass, (the former Winston builders), is a good idea as it brings something “local” to the client. As you say, they are booked out for at least two years and most people who are going to spend in excess of $2400.00 will most likely not buy from a store. Typically they want to discuss specific needs/likes, such as action and hardware with the actual builder.
You may want to check out some lesser known contemporary builders and approach them with your idea. Pricing should probably be between $700.00 to $1200.00. This price level seems more suited for a walk in customer and you should probably be able to move a few. You’re in the business of making money so selling them would be nice. The current trend in bamboo is 7’6” in the 4 to 5 weight range, either in a traditional hex or a quad.
If you’re just looking to have a few around for display and moving the inventory isn’t as important, I would suggest Grangers. They are a western, (Colorado), production rod and enjoy a good reputation.
Good Luck and let us know how you make out.

MemberI’m new here but had to jump in. I’m the opposite in that I occasionally fish glass or graphite. Most of our rods, (My wife fishes too), tend to be bamboo. I did just get a very sweet McFarland 7’, 3 piece, three weight however, and really enjoy it. As far as bamboo goes, the Somerset Show was a killer and I purchased this from a friend of mine who is a builder, Bill Taylor from Boiling Springs, Pa. It’s a 6’9” 2/2, three weight. It casts a very sweet 3TT.
