Hardy Bougle IV 3-1/4″. I have three extra spools for it and it ends up on most of the rods I fish with. Like Jay, I tend to fish mostly bamboo and it looks pretty nice with most of my rods.

One other option would be to look at the Tamron 90mm 2.8. You still get the distance but it’s a little less expensive.

I bought one earlier this year and tried it out in YNP. Bottom line……I really like this lens. I bought the older/cheaper version as I use it on a D90. You should not be disappointed. F4 seems to let in plenty of light and still gives some nice backgrounds. From F11 and up, its flippin’ awesome. At 12 to 14mm, you get a whole new perspective on things, a different way of seeing things. Good Luck & let us know how you make out.

I‘m going on my second year with the G3 Convertibles. This year I was disappointed to see the true waist high version come out. A friend who I fish with picked them up and while very nice, I’m now glad I went with the convertibles.
Just be careful though, grass rods are a slippery slope (as is fly tying, digital photography, etc., etc….)
As my Dad once said (slightly modified), new cane rods and new sports cars are always cheaper than new girlfriends, at least if you are married. Hope you enjoy it.

First of all congrats on the new rod. I know you’ve been looking forward to it for quite a while. Jay has given you good advice. That rod will handle an indicator rig with now problems and once you get used to it, you may even be happier with the way it casts multiple flies than your Sage. As he said, slow down. Let the rod do the work. Try stopping at the end of your back cast and just wait. Let the line fall behind you. Feel it load? You should. The rod will let you know when it’s ready. Now try a complete cast. Regardless of how much line you have out, the rod will always let you know “when.” That’s one of the things that make it so much fun to cast. Regarding lines, I’m fortunate enough to have acquired a few of each weight over the years and I can tell you a bamboo rod is no different than graphite or boron. Certain rods come alive with the right line. I’m like Dave and use the 444 peach a lot. I also like the Wulff TT tapers.

Also, while I don’t have PSE 7, if you click on the Help tab, they should have some tutorials both in there and on the CD you loaded the software from. Will I have to agree with you about the Kelly Kettle. We’ve had one for three years now and truly enjoy it.

I also agree with the casting lessons and letting her chose her own rod. Nancy now has three, only one of which I bought her. Mind you, I have bought her a few more over the years as gifts. Unfortunately or fortunately, I now use these or they are sitting on the rack. Truth be told, most of the rods she currently uses are ones I have bought for myself, she tried them and I have yet to fish them again. I keep telling myself that’s a good thing.
