MemberI hooked it from the shore in that spot but there were a lot of sharks about so I had to freespool it to let it get away and called for a boat – still a world record. Its out in the Wessel Islands – a place called Hole in the Wall. The current pours through here, its like a river 2 kms long with crocodiles drifting past and huge sharks and gropers.

MemberThere was a magazine shootout of a bunch of sub $500 (Australian dollars) 8 weight rods recently and the new Sage FLight scooped the pool. I fished with it last week and its a bloody good rod, new fittings etc. a great set-up with all the warranties.

MemberBuzz you’re dead right, it really is a very small industry that is hugely over serviced and supplied. We’re right in the thick of it and love the game with a passion and the consequence is that we think its the universe. The reality is very different and my first visit to the Denver show this year reinforced that perspective.

MemberI have a mount of that thing hanging on my wall and every time I look at it I shake my head in disbelief. Since then I’ve done a little more research. Seems the fish is what’s known as a “slob trout” which is a brownie that hangs around and feeds in the estuaries rather than going to sea. I suspect that the words “slob” and “slough” may have a common ancestry but I’m only guessing there; and the word “slob” apparently means estuary in parts of Scotland.
Our presumption is that the fish had been eating elvers and that’s why it was so fat. I think it actually died in the net of a heart attack because the intention had been to release it. It probably also consumed a lot of small trout.

MemberGuys the Sage Bluegill is a great rod. We gave a prototype a thorough thrashing on a bunch of carp on the flats here in Oz. For smallmouth etc (and probably even Largemouth,) I think its a great option.
Redington also came out with a bunch of shorter budget Bass rods at this year’s show and married with the new Rio Short Outbounds you have a great set-up for bass fishing.

MemberAlso consider the new Redington Predator rods, these are shorter bass style rod in 4 models and are outstanding value at sub- $200. I was very impressed with these rods, especially loaded with the new Rio Outbound “Short”. 😀

MemberIf you fish smallmouth bass a lot get yourself a Sage Bluegill – I know its not an Orvis but its just a beautiful rod to fish with.

MemberI guided for a few years and grew to loath it, I like catching too much and almost had to stop fishing for a while to get some perspective. Treat it lightly.

MemberLefty’s rule of photographing fly casting is to shoot at 250th. At this speed its slow enough to allow a little blur to fatten the line. I set at 250 then underexpose 1.5 stops most of the time (depending on just how dark the background is).
This is a scan from a slide.

This shot was taken to emphasise and illustrate what “overhang” is when using a shooting head.

MemberThanks Zach, I know there’s some GREAT stuff in the pipeline that’s otherwise known as the editing suite. We filmed three episodes in New Zealand, one with Simon Chu on nymphing techniques for the South Island rivers which is absolutely outstanding and another that we filmed in an afternoon on a spring creek when the mayfly hatch just went NUTS as did the fish. Also a carp episode which I really like and some bigger barramundi and tuna and etc etc etc…………
Looking forward to catching up in Denver for one of your local frothy brews.

MemberI have a Dyna king Aristocrat, I’ve had it for so long I don’t even know if they make them anymore. I can go from a 10/0 Gamakatsu SL12 to a size 12 hook with almost no adjustment and a gorilla could swing off the 10/0 without it moving. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
