Hey guys –
I am leaving for the Gulf with Lauren tomorrow. We’re staying in a house on Fort Morgan peninsula west of Gulf Shores, Alabama (near the opening of Mobile Bay). Should be a fun trip; we’ll be there all next week. Next Tuesday (if I recall correctly), we’re heading over to Florida to chase jacks, blacktip shark, undoubtedly some ladyfish, and hopefully some bonita (aka false albacore) with a guide named Baz Yelverton (you cannot make such a name up). It’s my cousin’s birthday and I arranged the trip as his present.
We are supposed to have internet access, so I’ll be loading the Photoblog back up from the road. Hopefully, we’ll catch something other than ladyfish, but we’re basically guaranteed those. In the past, I’ve caught bluefish and pompano in the surf (although the bluefish would chomp off if they were of any size; this year I have bite tippets).
Carter, what was the name of that knot you use to rig bite tippet to leader? The slim beauty? Do you just hook it to the fly with a haywire twist?

I’m eyeing ( in a smaller size) one of these for a upcoming trip where I don’t want to haul my big bag and need something that will handle some serious abuse.

I have a version of one of their roll top dry bags.. but.. if you are looking for water-proof I think “Waterproof “bucket” is waterproof from the bottom up.” and “weather resistant top” are warning signs…
If you are gonna bring camera gear I have to suggest a waterproof plastic membrane bag (there are several on the market) inside a pelican case.. Never, EVER trust a pelican case unless
You’ve got a Zodiac with kayak racks? COOL! Take photos of that for sure.
Actually they are 9ft/10ft kayaks.. so they fit inside the 3.4m (12ft) zodiac pretty well… but then again.. the zodiac doesn’t make much of an impression in the water anyway.. drafts about 2″ fully loaded with 2 guys, gas, gear and a 15.. but it’s a nightmare to pole in the wind…
Sometimes you load the kayaks up in the zodiac and run to flats.. anchor of the zodiac (mother ship) and fish or wade with the kayaks..

Get a copy of Gulf Coast Fisherman magazine and follow the Wells Fishing forecast for tidal movement velocity and times. Be on the water at those times. Moving tide is essential in salt water. Look for bait and predators chasing them. We call it “nervous water”. Seagulls will sometimes hover over schools of bait that are being driven to shallow water by fish. Diving seagulls are a good sign.
Bring some small seducers and spoon flies for redfish. Nothing to big. The 8wt will be perfect for inshore and nearshore but you should get salt water line. The heat makes the use of tropical lines necessary for the long casts that are needed.
The 10wt will be handy for bigger and stronger fish like tarpon, cobia, jacks and for heading out to bigger water in the zodiac. Ask the guide if larger fish are in the area.
If you wade be very careful of stingrays. Slide your feet, never step. Put your foot down on a stingray and your trip is over. Misery follows.
There is really no telling what you can catch in the surf. Especially if you sling some chum and wait. Bullsharks are in the surf so be careful if you are on foot. You could anchor the zodiac in the surf as well.
Last thing, expect every fish to have some serious teeth.

Check to see if your camera has a grid mode for the viewfinder… this is probably one of my favorite additions that comes free with DSLR’s… without having to buy a new viewfinder or prism you just turn it on and you get little grid lines right there…
A better body will lock on faster, however… if you are shooting in low light very little is going to help you other than higher iso or a faster lens…or a good flash… 2.8 is fast glass…
My Canon 10D also has a DOF button on the body. I suppose I could use it and experiment, but when I have tried using it in the past it didn’t realy help me much (maybe I just haven’t experimented with it enough yet). And it is definitely pretty dark at f22. But this is a good tip. There are so many buttons and functions on these cameras, (and more than one way to skin a cat at times) that it is really tough to remember all the capabilities and functions, especialy for a guy who just likes to keep it simple. But, I am learning more each day, and becoming even more familiar with my camera. I really want to learn the camera well, so that I can visualize what I want to do, quickly make the correct adjustments and settings, and make the shot. Like a race car driver, the better I know my machine, the faster and more skilled my driving will be. Hopefully, the more inticacies and functions on my camera I know, the better a photographer I will be.
It’s extremely hard to see.. when it stops down.. especially when you have been looking at what is proably a well lit bright image.. then you stop down and look through the lens at f22, your eye simply can’t compensate to show the DOF..
First, a 50mm 1.4 prime has many fewer elements and is likely a much higher quality lens than a zoom.
You’re simply asking way too much of a Point & Shoot…and shooting at night asks alot of any camera and photographer…
It’s got a small lens and a small sensor and a weak flash…
As long as the card itself isn’t damaged the data can be pulled off… when you crack the case on CF you notice the string of leads that plug into the pin slots…
This is HIGHLY unusual, CF is one of the most rugged forms of storage there is.. does the card slide in easy?
Usually what the CF card plugs into gets damaged.. not the card… the card is “female”…
I would get a very bright light source and see if you can see anything in the pin slots in the CF… the contacts in there can get crud in them… I always carry mine in my pocket… but lots of folks caution against this as pocket crud can cause issues (I just have really clean pockets! 🙂
Is it a name brand card?
Did the Mac try to mount it as a disk?
Does the card look physically damaged?
