I was at settles today, and took a few pics for you,
Here is the take out, and they have built a wood walk way to the parking lot, it pretty nice and wide.

No boat ramp at settles, it does have a good landing area just under the old bridge, but you will have to carry it though the woods maybe 75yrds at the most. Settles has a pretty good parking area, but it fills up fast, and unless you go early, expect a lot of other boaters/tubers to be around. If you want a boat ramp, the next one below the dam will be at abbots bridge, 8miles below settles.

You can use a polar fibre minnow, it works the same way as the rope lure, by getting in the gars teeth.

Will you catch more with a Pole Dancer than a Clouser?  Or perhaps some of Mr. Cowens’ own flies?   $$$

No, probably not but I would rather catch one on top then five on a clouser. On the lake i fish “walk the dog” action is what they want, most of the time we have to tease them up with a Zara spook and then cast a popper to them. So to me it worth the $.

Rob, from what I have read, the heads have to be injection molded and that is most of the cost of making this fly.
Below I copied and pasted a post from Charlie himself. These are from surftalk forum.

“I will say that I have nothing to do with price points of any of my patterns and get reminded often by the folks at Umpqua that my choices for materials and hooks etc are always the most expensive.I like using the very best stuff.

This project was especially different as I was the one who got the head manufactured by myself .That whole process was a total pain in the ass.I won’t soon be doing anything like that again!!!!!!!!

We do not have a lot of fly targets like bluefish here in California that will shredd a fly in short order. That said unless you break off a fish these flies will last a hell of a long time. I have fished the same ones for several years, doctoring up the paint scheme with fingernail polish.

I will say, that if you do buy and fish the fly you will typically not be in the same catch ratio catagory as your boat partner.
I have had dozens of outings where my catch ratio totally outran my boat partners. The most drastic I can remember was a 14 to 2 flurry during a boil here in California on stripers that were keyed in on chuncky hatchery trout. My buddy was using a gurgler.

Water clarity is one condition that will totally show this flys true merrit. When fish have the chance to study the fly and it’s movement from a distance that is when this fly really becomes amazing. If you have a minute , take a look at the video footage of the fly swimming.

It has been responsible for 12 stripers over 20 pounds ( with only my chosen test group fishing it)which in our west coast fishery is really a feat. We just don’t have stripers like the East Coast. You folks are really lucky for sure!!!

There are three sizes of Pole dancers

    the Small is a 3.5 ” on a size 2 SL12S Gamakatsu and costs $12

the Medium is 5.5″ on a size 1/0 SP113L3H Gamakatsu and costs $14

the Large is 8.5 ” on a size 5/0 5320 Owner spinnerbait and costs $24

The video footage that was done with Leland was shot mostly with the 5/0 version in the rainbow trout pattern.I do not want folks to think that the fly in the video is a $12 fly when it is in fact a $24 fly. Additionally, I do not want folks to think that a small in a size 2 will slide a foot to 14 inches from side to side.

I fish the larger one the most because I am a trophy hunter so to speak. I have been known to cast the 5/0 for 14 hours straight prospecting for the grandma of all stripers.I have had my chances at her as well , but I pulled the fly away from her. Dammit!!!!! Having caught stripers in the 50 pound class myself I know she was right close to that.

The larger size does move the most as one might expect and they move less as the size reduces. It is a function of the weight and the momentum that each given size can generate.

The hooks that were chosen for each size are critical for the target species as well as the balance and movement of the fly. All the diferent sizes have caught many different species, Queen fish, peacocks, trout, smallmouth, tuna, pike, roosterfish, dorado, barracuda, trevaly, stripers , snook, etc.

Again, the price is a function of the regular retail industry and my normal signature contract with Umpqua applies to this fly the same as it does with all my other patterns and all other signature tiers at Umpqua. That said, it is a ***** of a fly to tie AND get correct consistently.

If you buy one to fish, best of luck, if you buy one to copy, best of luck as well. If you just can’t bring yourself to buy one , I get that as well. Either way, enjoy the journey this fly will generate for you and know that I have really enjoyed the process to this point.

Cheers and tight lines to all.

    Charlie

I went ahead and ordered 4, I should have them soon. I read last night that everyone has sold out, and they are now on back order. It is a lot of cash for a fly, but with the type fishing I do, the chances of me losing one are slim. I’m able to use high Lbs tippet, and I’m casting over off shore hump that are 10+ ft deep.

Keith when I get mine we’ll have to go test them out, top water is great right now, and should be for a few more weeks.

Yea Adam, that would be great. I still need to take you out on lanier, I’m killing them at night right now.

Zach, I was wondering how that section would fish this year, I heard after the flood last year that there was 100+ dead trout up on the grass at aac. A buddy of mine said he has a picture of it, I’ll try to get him to send it to me.

Abbotts to medlock is 4miles, It takes about 3-4hrs, if you keep going to jones bridge its 3 more miles, and maybe 2-3hrs more. These are fishing times, it can be done a lot faster if your not fishing. I like to stop and fish the areas around the pleasnt hill bridge and also the grass banks along AAC both spot hold lots of fish. If you are going to go to jones bridge, park and take out on the roswell side, it has a ramp, and is alot easier with a canoe then the gwinnett side.

If your in a canoe, you can to float to Settles Bridge for a short float, or to abbotts Bridge(hwy 120) for a long float. Both spots have nice take outs and parking, I think settles is about 4 miles, and abbotts is 13 miles. Up the river outfitters does a shuttle service to both of those take outs if you only want to bring one car, I think it’s like $10-$15.
I like the abbotts to medlock or abbotts to jones bridge better, the areas around the dam can be packed with tubes and canoes on a nice weekend.
