Sorry to hear this. I met Rooster here in Atlanta about 5 years ago when the fly fishing show came to the Gwinnett Center. He gave a great presentation on the Ruby, Beaverhead, and some spring creeks in that area of MT. Hope they catch the thief.

    Zach,
I just spoke to a non-fishing co-worker that did some canoeing over the weekend in the dh section of the hooch. She said she saw someone catch a large striped bass and held it up for them to see. She mentioned that alot of mud had collected around the boat ramp areas. She couldn’t remember which access point her group used. She was just along for the fun.

    Just amazing. What a place.

Jonathan…how long did it take you to paddle Cable Cove to Hazel Creek? I’ve done it with an outboard but want to try it with my Native Ultimate.

If I remember correctly, it was about 1.5 hours.

I’ve got a Wenonah Fisherman 14′ made from Royalex.  It’s a great canoe for fishing, but it doesn’t track as well as some of the touring canoes due to the priority being placed on the stability and width of the canoe rather than speed and efficiency. I’ve paddled it across Fontana lake to Hazel Creek from Cable Cove and back.  We never felt to concerned about tipping over out in the chop, but the next time I do that trip, I’ll probably bring my electric kicker.  It’s a haul!

in reply to: Fish Taxidermy #49176

to use a tired phrase…”I know, right?!”  This taxidermist had mounted some deer and bass for friends of mine, and did excellent work on those.  He had mounted trout before, but I think he specializes in deer and bass.  I guess it’s hard to find a good trout taxidermist here in the south, since they probably do alot more bass and pan fish species.  Here’s a picture of the fish…

Here’s a picture of the mount…he didn’t come close on the gill plate color.

Choose carefully.  I chose to do a skin mount of a wild male rainbow trout a few years ago, and due to the seasonal kyped jaw, the taxidermist said he couldn’t find a head form to match my fish. (They usually don’t use the real heads anymore because due to the heavy oil content of salmonids, the heads tend to shrivel up and dry out.) He tried to build it out with putty, but it didn’t come close and was a huge disappointment.  It made me regret killing the fish.  If I had a camera with me on that trip, I probably would have been happy with a photo, especially if I had known how the mount was going to turn out.

That last fish is just too sweet!

I see you found the Little South Fork desks.

I’ve wondered about handling lead wire, and I’m usually licking my fingers just after using it to get dubbing to roll tighter on the thread.

    Zach,

Thanks for putting up the video on setting up a fly reel.

Gorgeous fish! That water looked painfully clear.

What a stud of a brown!

in reply to: Spot? Do You Have One? #44884

We bought some for a pisgah national forest backpacking trip, and the spots worked WAY better than the iridium SAT phones we’ve used in the past. The canopy in pisgah is the biggest issue, and the spot did a much better job of piercing through the trees.

So whether you are football fans or not, anyone up for grabbing a beer post-match?

My wife and I had some tickets lined up, but we decided that we need to work in the yard on Saturday.  We’ll be tuned in via WSB. Maybe next time.
    Burgers/Fries – The Grill
Home style veggies – 5 Star Day Cafe
The Grit – Michael Stype’s trendy fusion restaurant.
Barberitos – The best burrito and tomatillo sauce period.

Should be a good game. As a Dawg fan, I’m a little concerned. Arkansas has a great offense, probably better than South Carolina’s. We’ll learn a lot this Saturday. No shortage of good restaurants and pubs downtown. Enjoy.

Wow, “Milkshake” is one big moma!

    in reply to: 7.5′ 3wt Recommendations #43802

I’ve enjoyed my St. Croix 7’9″ 3WT Legend Ultra. It has handled several fish over 16″ with ease. It has a faster action than the Scott F or Orvis Superfine, but loads great for short casts.

Thanks guys. I apologize for the photo quality. I’m way out of my league on this board when it comes to great photos. I just take a simple waterproof Point and shoot with me and hope for the best.
