The Stonefly Inn in Twin Bridges got broken into last night and the thieves stole 10 Nautilus reels and 10 Scott rods.

The owner, Rooster, is a great guy and this just sucks. If anyone sees large numbers of Scotts or Nautiluses go up for sale anywhere, report back please.

History says–and this is just what I’ve seen covering these stories for the magazines–that the thief is likely to know fly fishing well, be younger, broke, probably on the move, and to have worked in a fly shop before.

Sorry to hear this. I met Rooster here in Atlanta about 5 years ago when the fly fishing show came to the Gwinnett Center. He gave a great presentation on the Ruby, Beaverhead, and some spring creeks in that area of MT. Hope they catch the thief.

Bad deal. A lot of people have commented, ‘well they have insurance.’ Yes, they would have insurance coverage over the stolen goods themselves, but only at wholesale prices. It’s not like they automatically get to “sell” all that stuff for their expected profit. And this is about the worst time of year to suddenly have no inventory–height of summer travel season in Montana, just after the show (when all the manufacturers are back-ordered). This will hurt the fly shop insurance or no. If you’re planning a trip through Twin Bridges, swing by the Stonefly Inn and buy some stuff to help them out.

This, in general is disturbing. Rooster and Dana (his wife) are great people and we’ve enjoyed the Stonefly every time we’ve stayed there. In the Billing Gazette article, the thefts at Hells Canyon are really scary. This is an FAS on the Jefferson where a lot of guides and floaters leave their vehicles for the take out when they float the lower Beaverhead. Madison County is over 3600 square miles (about the size of Delaware and Rhode Island) with a population of ~7500. They have 6 deputies, 1 detective along with a the sheriff and undersheriff. Not a lot of manpower to solve these kinds of crimes. I suspect that if these kinds of crimes continue in the county, there will be a revival of some Western vigilantism.
