Nice post fishmich! I was on the Big Horn back in Oct. What a great river! I recognized a lot of those spots in your pictures and really made me want to take a road trip! Where did you guys stay? We stayed at Cottonwood camp in a cabin and it was pretty nice and fairly cheap.

    Pancho,

I completely agree with Zach on the L2 purchase as I think they are a great pair of boots. That said you should also look very hard at the Simms Keen boots. I have a pair of these and they are by far the best boots I own! I put over a hundred days on them this year and they still look practically new. If you do a lot of hiking around these are the boots to have! I just met with the Simms rep last week and he told me that the L2’s are his best selling boot, but the Keens are moving in fast on them. What ever you end up with make sure you try them on with waders so you get the right fit as they seem to vary a little from your regular size.

Thanks everybody for your input on this. There are some great ideas out there! Guy I like the idea of adding fly rods above and below Rock Creek. I also played around with it a little this weekend and getting rid of the back ground behind the skull and the shadow behind Rock Creek sure simple it up and I think it looks nice. Plus adding fly shop to the bottom helps a lot too! I would still like to get a fly in there somewhere though…..

Thanks a lot everybody for the input! Keep it coming if you have more!!! 🙂

Nice rainbow Hugh! Looks like that fish could use some sun screen with that sun shining on it like that. Did you catch that on a scud of some kind?

All I can do is dream of fishing right now here in Montana. We had a rain on snow event this week and today they are calling for wind gusts between 50-100 mph depending on where you are in the state. Thank God I don’t have clients today!!!!

Here is another picture of my two beasts after a hard day of fun. Sally was not posed to look that way either. She would sometimes stretch and end up in these weird positions.

This is a picture of my dogs Riley and Sally. The picture was taken one day when I was fishing up the North Fork. I was making them stay on the bank while I fished and turned around to see them in this perfect pose. We have since lost Sally (the black lab) to cancer. 🙁

John, that is too funny about your dog chewing up the collar! I would have loved to watch that whole escapade gone down! Have you ever watched the dog whisper on national geographic? He has some great techniques for regaining control of your dog. Plus he is pretty entertaining.

Your dog chewing up his collar reminded me of a funny story about my lab. He is a very observant dog and can figure out how to open things from watching a human do it. We had some friends that had a water cooler and after watching all of us go and push the little handle down to fill our cups with water he was going over and doing it himself. He would go over and put his paw on the handle and drink right from the tap! It was pretty darn funny to watch, but a little messy!

I’m sure you still get a lot of enjoyment out of your dog even if he is just a family dog.

    J. have you tried wearing your dog down a little before training him? I have had a couple of labs that were exactly like yours and they needed a lot of exercise before they would be willing to learn a thing. Then when it comes time to training I try to never say a command more than once. If the dog doesn’t respond the first time I make him. For really head strong dogs I am a huge fan of the shock collar. My dog Riley is a super smart dog, but sometimes he thinks he is the boss and he can come to me when he feels like it. When starts showing this kind of behavior put the shock collar back on him for a couple of days and it is amazing how quickly he remembers that I am the boss. That said you want to be sure and really follow the directions on how to use these things. You can really ruin a dog if they are used in the wrong way.
Nice shots hugh. I was really hoping to see your dog in action in some of those photos. Where not able to get any shots off?

Zach, Don’t let these guys change the way you write and teach people about fly fishing. The articles I have read of yours have been very informative and written in a manner that is both entertaining and educational. I don’t think in any way shape or form are you doing anything in your writing that degrades the sport of fly fishing. You are obviously a smart guy and one who speaks from the heart and it shows in your articles. I have spoke with many of my clients about you and I have always got the impression that they feel the same way as I do. Hell, that’s why I’m always trying to coax you back to Montana! I know at least a dozen of my clients that would love to learn from you myself included.

Keep up the good work and don’t change who you are because of what someone else thinks!

ps- Is there anywhere I can read your most current American Angler articles online? The B&N here in Missoula was sold out of it.

Hey Hugh! Nice dog! The whiter haired labs are hard to come by, but boy are they great dogs. The biggest problem with mine is I can’t keep him out of the water. He absolutely loves to swim! Not so good when you are trying to catch fish. I found that the best thing I can do is let him have his fun first and then I have a fighting chance of keep him from spooking holes.

Ya I saw on the news last night that a lot of the states down south were getting some cold and snow! They showed a lot of wrecks! All the better reason to call in sick and go fishing instead!!

This has been a truely great post. I have enjoyed everyones points of views, but Matt Tucker your honesty really cracks me up! I hear a heavy southern accent when I read your words and it just makes me crack up! Thanks for that brutal honesty and making me smile!

This is a wintery picture I took yesterday at the ranch I work at. No pictures today as it is snowing like a bastard!

Zach, I’m sure watching the hogs will entertain you, but if you want to watch some REAL football Montana style you can watch the University of Montana Grizzlies take on Southern Illinios on ESPN Saturday at 7:30pm MST. I of course will be at the game watching it live! GO GRIZ!!!

I look forward to seeing some pictures taken with the new camera Zach! Personally, I didn’t see anything wrong with the pictures from the old camera but what do I know.
