Do you guys use a boat or wade when you go? I’ve been wanting to go ever since I heard about Albacore, but still have yet to make it. Sure would like to one of these years. I even have all the gear needed for them. Maybe next year. Another problem would be, once I go, then that would be another trip I would be thinking about all the time…

    Next year maybe.

Nicely done Kalvin! Can’t believe the water clarity cleared that much overnight.

Some of the articulated flies you buy have the front hook cut off. One the rear is attached. I actually cut the front hook off a few of the articulated flies I have for the special reg areas.

Another thing I’d like to mention, I was fishing last weekend hunting for a big brown which I saw hunting poor rainbows, anyways, I tied on a 5″ olive articulated and I actually caught 2-13″ bows with it. Didn’t think that would happen.

I just bought a fuji finepix z33wp from wall mart yesterday, $169.00. The reviews seem like they will suit me for a basic wp digital camera. I have to test it out yet.

Little Red river in Arkansas is also very good in November. There is some HUGE browns in that system. All wild fish. Wish I’d be around for it.

I have the book. It’s well worth the money. I just wish I had the time to get out any try and target them.

I know of some areas that are good for wade fishing for redfish. They are around the barrier islands in the Gulf near Gulfport, MS. I’ve never been there but I was told about it by someone who lives there.

Most of the areas your talking about you have to have a boat or yak. I’d like to hear of any establishments that actually rent kayaks nearby good fishing. To get to most of the good fishing you almost have to hire a guide. 3 days will run you $1600.00+ At least if you pay that you should be into fish.

The water I was fishing was fast. I didn’t knowif it was possible to have that kind of drag. I had one of those thingamabobber indicators on and I probably had too much weight on the leader, I’m not sure. Getting everything perfect for nymph fishing is difficult.

I was out wading the White on yesterday with two units going, it was some work not to fall in, I did actually go partially in and stumbled 3 other times. I don’t think they were full bore,

I was using the 2′ of 20lb. and 2′ of 12lb., problem is the knot connecting the two lines. You can’t use a blood knot, and a surgeon’s knot is big and ugly.

I’ve been fishing the Little Red in Arkansas and hitting the banks hasn’t been working. I caught one brown around 18″. The big fish are in the deep pools. I can’t even get to them with my 26′ 240 grain shooting head line.

I did learn a new tactic to try, and I tied two olive articulated streamers to try this coming weekend. I fished the Rims shoals on the White this past Sunday. Nymphing was hit or miss. Two fisherman were catching many fish with small olive wooly buggers. I swallowed my pride and asked and watched exactly how they were fishing. They were casting downstream, letting the flies drift till they straightened out then they started stripping upstream, very very slowly. 1-2 inches and pause. They both had sink tip lines and the one guy had his rod tip all but touching the river bottom. It worked, I caught a few like that.

I’m going to go this weekend and practice that some more and with a 26′ sink tip. The key is to get the flies on the bottom.

I thought you couldn’t use a blood knot unless the two lines you tie together are 1 size or so difference. 20 to a 15 would work but I don’t know about 20 to 12.

I was using a 12 lb. tippet for the big ones which were 5 1/2″ long. They sure look good in the water.

I would have thought the smaller streamers the big fish would have not given the time of day. I also honestly think the real big fish are in the deepest holes and there are many on the Little Red. If that’s the case I can’t even reach them with my 26′ 240 grain shooting head.

This has been an excellent topic and I have learned some new tactics to try in the next 4 weeks. I want to thank everyone for all their wonderful input. Keep it coming. If I manage a big fish I’ll try and post it.

In order for me to hit the banks during generation you have to use a boat, am I correct with that statement? Is bank bashing productive as soon as the generate or sometime after the generation is steady?

One thing I forgot to mention, I was out Sat and I know where there is a very large brown, I’d say 24″ to over 30″ class. I’ve seen him feed and I tried to get him but the spot was allready loaded with bait fisherman. Anyways, I walked downstream and fished a while casting my XL flies with no luck. Came bad and most the dudes were gone except two older fellows. The one guy said one of the bait fisherman had the big one one and he broke the line, thank goodness or the fish would have been taken form the river. I’d really like to get that one. I have also seen 3 other ones along with the big one. Maybe I should go there some night.

I would really like to land a big one before coming home. I have till the beginning of October.

Nice fish, is it over 20″? Nice hat also, it looks like it keeps the sun off.

I guess the key with streamer fishing in these tailwaters are how the sculpins are behaving during the current conditions when you are out. I don’t know much about that, but it sounds like they are active when the water is down. I would also think they would be active during low times of low light.

Now I know why my efforts aren’t paying off. Time to change tactics and go with smaller buggers.

I have the litespeed 3 and 3.5, awesome reels for the money. Reccommend the litespeed of velocity for the salt. You have to rinse them when your done fishing the salt though. I had the handle on the one freeze on me from using it in the salt, easily fixed.

I use a 26′ shooting head type 4 outbound line and 5 1/2″ weighted streamers. It’s like casting a wet sock.

Maybe the flies I’m using are too big. Do you fish the buggers thru a deep pool, and what type retrieve do you use? I was using a 26′ outbound type 4 shooting head.

Check out the fly tying section on surf talk, there’s tons of peanut bunker flies, some quite large.
