MemberWell my first trip in search for chrome was a success! I met up with a small group of dudes to fish for Lake Erie Steelhead for the first time, last weekend. We camped and fished the in the WNY area.
Here’s the scoop: Friday started out for the 5hr trip around 1pm. Rain was in the forecast but was supposed to stop by noon. Well….lets just say the weather man was WRONG!!! Arrived at the camp site about 7pm and the fire was going, dinner was almost done and cold beer was had by all! I think the equation was like this: more rain = more beer. We had hope (so much so we still got up at 0530) even though it was still raining when we got up. Saturday was pretty much a bust we hit a few spots trying to find some fishable H2O but no real luck. Cool part was I got to see a ton of water. With this being my first time I learned a lot about what to look for, knowing how quick a system clears, how elevation with in a system plays in to it, and when all else fails find the first “impassable”!!! The weather cleared and we hung our hat on one stream to clear but the catch was had to get there early and establish position at the head of the run! I had no idea early meant 430… Woke up Sunday and as I did not realize it yet but the stars must have aligned over night. First everyone is up and ready to roll on time, left camp at 0506. Made the drive and no cars were in the parking lot, I am still a lil skeptical because just 15 hrs earlier the stream was chocolate brown with less than inches of vis. Gear up and get to the stream and I could not believe my eyes the stream is down at least 2 feet and its still dark but with in minutes we shine a head lamp on the water and as if we hit the lottery… we are looking at a foot and a half of vis. To top it all off we get to the head of the pool and nobody is there!
I fished from 7 till noon and had an absolute BLAST!!! I was not the first to hook up but was the first to land! This was new to me so I did not land my first 2 hookups. The 2 or 3 head shakes then a 30-50’ run took a little getting use to! Third times a charm!

MemberThanks guys!
Nate: I am out the rest of the month, Trip to AZ for Apache/Gila and then controlling for FF Nationals in Sate College. Possibly Nov time frame.
Dave: Thanks again for the offer, sorry I missed you! The crowd was there but had little to no impact on us. We were the first ones there and with 5 guys pretty much locked down the pool!!! Downstream was a lil GOONish but I think the horrible conditions the day befor and a 1pm buffolo game kept the crowds down! I quickly realized the importance of getting to the water even though you could not fish for another 2 hrs!
