FWIW in my experience fish tend to look bigger when you pinch rather than cover the tail, but of course in New Zealand you have the luxury of actually catching big trout to begin with!

I think that’s a congenital deformity, not some kind of injury, so he would have lived with it his whole life and presumably adapted.

No, I’m pretty sure that’s a relatively new hair do Tim’s sporting. ;D
Better question.. is how did he loose half his hair.. oops, I mean face, and continue to eat and maintain that size? Pretty adaptable these wild animals are.
Good question Eric. We were truly astounded it was in such great condition — aside from the seriously messed up face (and hair do… oh, we’re talking about the fish) it was an exceptional specimen.
Here’s another shot of ‘Franken-fish’ seeing as it seems to be generating a bit of interest.

HHi Phil. This isn’t my photo to offer but I’m sure the boys from Southland Fish & Game NZ (southland@fishandgame.org.nz) will give you permission to publish it… it’s in their interest to publicise what didymo looks like so anglers both here in NZ and potential visitors etc are aware and viglilant.
It’s arguably the most famous/infamous image of how devastating didymo can be. Pictured is Fish & Game NZ field officer Stu Sutherland on the Mararoa River, in the Southland region of the South Island, NZ.

Thanks for the input guys… and please keep it coming. For the record, I’m not planning to quote anyone, just hunting down some initial thoughts on the issue.
I think a lot of what you’re saying transposes to NZ too (or anywhere in the world for that matter).
Moosedog, I’m right there with you on ‘hot-spotting’ mate. Overall though, I’m erring on the side that the internet has become an invaluable tool in the angler’s arsenal – though others might beg to differ…?
