Tim AngeliMemberPaul was going through photos last week and realize that it had been exactly one year since we got this guy:

He decided that a return trip was in order, and it didn’t take long to entice me to load the car on Friday night and drive down to join him. While we didn’t get anything quite as big as last year, it was still a good 2 days of fishing with some quality fish brought to hand and plenty more given the long distance release. Here are some of the scenes from along the way…
This fish followed my flies for about 3 meters downstream before finally taking the nymph:

Paul got in on the action shortly after, with a solid brown on a dry. This fish appeared to be getting some hassle from the eels, with some chewed up fins and a big white gash on his side:

Mayflies started popping at about 11am, and continued to come off into the early evening. Some were so large that they brought back memories of standing knee deep in rivers back in Michigan during the hex hatch, and while the fish weren’t consistently rising, they were willing to come up to the surface for the proper offering. This one took a size 10 dry on the first cast:

The following day was supposed to be warm and sunny, which we figured would equate to an even better hatch. Unfortunately, the bugs never came. The fish stayed deep for the most part, but we managed to dredge a few up, including this beauty that made the long drive, expenses, and lack of sleep all worth while:

Paul also managed to reacquaint me with an old friend, a fish that I have seen caught on 3 separate occasions now. I wonder how many more times I’ll get to cross paths with this guy.

April 2011:

November 2011:

And finally, the requisite IA food shot, although nothing special by any means…just a quick stop at Macs before the long drive home on Sunday night:

Back to the grind for a couple weeks now, and then off to fish rage in Southland with the infamous Mr Chu. 😀

Very cool, indeed, Tim. It’s interesting to fish the same stretch of river fairly consistently. I’ve learned a lot from this stretch of water, and have a few nemeses that I’ll be elated if I am able to catch one day. There’s one fish in particular that continually taunts me…I might have to pull a night mission to try to get that one.
I can’t wait to collaborate with you in the future once you finish over there. And I mean on the river! Not the lab.
Looking forward to it Neal. When time and money allow, I’d love to do a tarpon trip with you.
Is the mullet gone?!!!!!
Unfortunately, yes. However, judging from recent results, the Tennessee waterfall might have had bad mojo…fish quality has improved post-mullet.

The Itinerant AnglerSomething weird I have noticed; you New Zealanders have kind of a national way of holding trout.

Haha…I assume you’re talking about the first photo. Don’t get Simon started on that! Honestly, I don’t recall consciously holding the fish like that. I didn’t even notice it until I looked at the photos afterward. In regards to who started it, I have heard a few names thrown around but don’t know enough to say publicly.

MemberFWIW in my experience fish tend to look bigger when you pinch rather than cover the tail, but of course in New Zealand you have the luxury of actually catching big trout to begin with!
🙂
Zach
Hey Zach, what do you mean by “pinch the tail”? Have you got a picture you can post to show what you mean?
