I hope he isn’t having to pay the $25 bucks each time.

I bought a Vantage 376 (3wt 7’6″) and I like it quite well. I could imagine wanting a softer rod, the Scott glass rod is on my list of things to try, but overall it has a great feel and has enough backbone when I need it.

Wow, April showed up on this podcast.

It is great to hear April has a great direction, The Landmark Forum she talked about is a little strange (scam/cult), but it sounds like she has really found a path and is on the path to great things.

On a side note, places like really turn women off fishing. I ‘m married to a wonderful feminist, and have two daughters, all of whom tear it up on the water.  I wish more of the male side of fly fishing recognized that T&A turn many women off fly fishing and maintain a certain stereotype that is getting quite trite, I love fishing with my wife and daughters.

Great podcast, thanks as always Zach.

I think it would work well for where you want to fish it. The one issue with the rod being used for carp

in reply to: Sage Smallmouth Rod #29773

I have one and I like it a lot. The taper on the line is very aggressive so when tossing really heavy flies, like clousers, it can smack them down pretty hard unless you pay attention to what you are doing. I love it for the the small creeks I fish because it really accurate for short casts and it excels at side arm casts.

Cloudveil makes some pants as well (Crystal Creek Wading Pant), but they retail for $369. I searched for a long time for the Simms pants but finally gave up and got some of the older Simms Classic Guide waders on a deep discount when the new ones came out.

4-8, but hopefully 3-10 by the end of the summer.

in reply to: Favorite BASS rod? #26678

I just got a the Sage smallmouth rod a month ago and it has been out on 4 or 5 trips now. It seems like a mid priced rod for $350 since it comes with the line. I agree with Jay that the rod is a canon, but the very aggressive taper really turns over flies hard and it has taken me a bit to get a non bass bug flies to turn over a little softer. I use the rod in tight quarters smallmouth fishing in creeks

    Who’s Native Ultimate?

in reply to: Photo Essay: Tour de Georgia #26225

Very cool about the gar. My wife and I will be chasing them in the next few weeks on the Lower Illinois. It is amazing to see them school in shallow water and chase around the stockers. Is that fly a nylron rope fly? How hard is it to release the fish?

in reply to: Adventures in carp fishing #25637

I wish my carp box had that many flies in it, but with the exception of the clousers mine is quite similar. I seem to relying on the NearNuff Crayfish 90% of the time this season, but once the water clears up I will give some others a try. I think the most challenging part of carp fishing is finding good spots that always have feeding fish. Once you find the spots it comes down to technique, but the more shots you have at fish the easier it will be to learn the dance.

I will post a picture from this season so I don’t feel left out. Needless to say I haven’t caught as many as Michael, but hopefully it will be easier once my spots get less muddy.

in reply to: ? Knot tool gizmo–how do you use it ??? #26253

I seem to use surgeon knots a lot and don’t use blood knots very much, but I always liked the trick in this video:

I think I got this video from here originally, but I figured some new people may find it useful.

I live in Oklahoma City. I would love to go down and fish with you sometime. This month is actually pretty busy with work deadlines and birthday parties, but I would love to take some time off in May and meet up down there. Drop me a PM and I will shoot you my email.

Both my wife and I plan to paddle each of ours solo with the kids in the front, but hopefully when the kids get a little older they will be able to help out some. I was a little worried about getting such a big boat, but I had heard that the 14.5 Ultimate wasn’t too hard for a single person. Hopefully they are right, else I will need to buy a set of weights too.

They are 14.5s. I didn’t get the rudder system yet, but I think it is something I will be looking into once

This is a damn shame, but an interesting point was made on another thread about Nature’s own method of rejuvination. I live in Dallas, and our closest trout waters are in SE Oklahoma on the Lower Mountain Fork tail-water that comes out of the Broken Bow Reservoir. It seems that that whole section of the south is getting hit hard. The LMF has been closed to the public until further notice. But, while the river is cleansed, and people are not allowed to intrude, perhaps Nature will right herself on her own.

The LMF is open again, but the water is pretty rough. Three Rivers (http://www.threeriversflyshop.com/) has some good pics up of what things looked like a few days ago. Hopefully our wild rainbows didn’t take too big of a hit.

We are having the same problems here in OK, but not nearly as bad as the White system is having. All the same I don’t think I will be fishing for trout for at least month. Even our really nice tailwater that has a section you can always fish because there are two dams, with only the down stream one being used for generation, will be blown out for the foreseeable future. I usually take solace in the fact that I can always chase carp locally, but with all the rain all my stomping grounds are muddy as hell. Depressing.

I am so sold on kayaks that I sold my bassboat last month and just upgraded to the Native Ultimate 12 Tegris to solve the weight issue.
