A giant squid was actually caught back in December:

Glad to hear you had a great time. There is a lot of water to explore and I know I could spend a few weeks doing it if given the chance. I think you found the main problem with Zone I in that the crowds would gravitate there. Right below the spillway if you willing to hike a little ways down you can find good water, but that area as well as the area around cardiac hill seem to draw in the fly fisherman and you may have to wait for a spot. Hopefully when you go back the generators will be off and you can get some zone 2 fishing in. We will have to fish together some time.

Zone 1 and Zone 2 provide much different experiences (I haven’t fished Zone 3). Once you get into Zone II things open up a lot more and you need to fish a lot smarter, but it does have a lot less traffic because it is the C&R area. The other boards provide some fishing reports, but my friend sticks to one fly almost religiously and it is a weighted Zebra Midge. I could go on for a while about how I like the diverse fishing experiences, but I will let you see for yourself.

I am from Oklahoma City and went to the LMF a few weeks ago for the first time. I really had a good time even though the fishing in zone 2 was a little rough. In zone 1 lots of fish can be had and the sight casting is great. One nice thing about the LMF is while it is a tailwater they generate after zone 1. So even when they are releasing water you can always fish. If you need more info feel free to contact me. You can get more info at Three River Fly Shop Forum (http://www.threeriversflyshop.com/cgi%2Dbin/phpbb/ ) or The Beavers Bend FlyShop Forum (http://www.beaversbendflyshop.com/cgi-bin/ib3/ikonboard.cgi). There are lot of Texans on the Beavers Bend Board.

in reply to: Fly Tyers #14722

I started about a year after I started fly fishing. I don’t think I ever had many regrets, but I do think my expectations were a bit high as fly tying is really a skill that takes a lot of time to master. For a time I was very obsessed with getting the fly just right and would always walk away from the vise a little depressed because I was progressing so slow. I think the most important thing would be to focus in on patterns you like to fish and that produce well for the type of fishing you like to do. For me fly tying becomes very rewarding when I catch fish on the flies that I have made. I don’t think I will ever be a great fly tyer because many of the tyers I admire are artists and I never see myself quite getting to their level, but I don’t make flies to make them beautiful (although i can turn out some nice ones these days).

People may disagree with me, but I think getting into tying to save money on flies is a bit of mistake. Every tyer I know is always buying this and that and it all seems to ad up very fast. Perhaps its because I always prefere to go to the fly shop so I can see what I am buying and to talk fishing. I think that is worth a little of a premium.

    in reply to: Reels #14943

I only use one reel at this point, but I have never had the chance to play in the salt. I get away with one reel because I use a Waterworks ULA Force 2LT/2xLT and can move in between my 4wt and 6wt very easily with just a spool. I will be purchasing something quite soon for a 2/3wt I plan to build, but I haven’t decided what is going to be the best reel for that setup at this point.

    1) Drag doesn’t seem to matter in most of my fishing situations, but I have had a few nice bass take a 30 or 40ft run on me and I was glad it was there. It seems like any of the drag systems is appropriate for my fishing situations, but I must say I like the conical drag on the Waterworks when compared to my older click and pawl reel. The Waterworks is just as smooth feeling as any click and pawl reel unlike some disc drag reels I have toyed with.

    2) I will fully admit to buying much more reel in my Waterworks than I probably need. Lets just say I got a hell of a deal on it and when you combine it with the fact I can change spools and move between a 4/5 or a 5/6 setup its almost like having 2 reels in once.

I bought a pair of L2s this year and while I don’t fish as much as Zach I have liked them quite well. I did buy them a tad small, but they have stretched out just enough to be perfect.
