MemberThere is nothing on their website to tell me this is anything other than a paid celebrity endorsement from a a celebrity who had little or nothing to do with fly fishing or the design/development/manufacturing/testing of the reels bearing his name. He did pose for a picture while holding an unstrung rod with an unspooled reel. So, he has seen one at one time and presumably laid hands on the reel itself.

MemberZach,
Is the YaBB Forum Software supported by any mobile applications for iOS?

MemberI just bought a North Face Alteo 35 liter backpack while I was visiting the Chicago last week. Even with liberal use of public transportation, I put in about 15 miles of walking. The single shoulder messanger bag was not cutting it.
It wasn’t the cheapest thing in the world, but it was their smallest technical pack with a frame, ventilation, and a spot for a full size hydration bladder. I’m going to pick up a couple 10-15 liter dry bags to stow inside.

MemberDan, thanks for your suggestion. At $1.99 for the IPad App ($1.00 more than the Iphone App, but I might end up with both), I decided to give it a try. I will take it on my camping trip this weekend and try it on some trails.
Question: does the Iphone (4s) have a GPS feature that is independent of the signal, so that it would also work despite the absence of cell phone signal? I guess there is an easy way to find out ($0.99) but if you know the answer, that would be an easier way to find out.
Cheers,
AaronMotion-X lets you download the maps for off-network use.

MemberHelpful hint – this party should consist of you, your fishing buddy, and one fat, slow person with bacon in their backpack. This operates on a principle similar to how fighter jets drop chaff to deflect an attack from a heat seeking missile.

Chaff => Radar Guided Missile
Flare => Heat-Seeking MissileThis is a pretty interesting discussion as it relates to carrying capacity of the ecosystem.

MemberTemperature ranges on fly lines seem to always bring up more confusion than they should. I think people do read too much into it but we could probably do a much better job at clearing up this info.
The Trout Stalker will absolutely work in Michigan. I used it all last summer on this side of the Lake (Wisconsin/Minnesota).
Tim,
Thanks for the clarification.

MemberI haven’t heard of those apps before, but good topo maps are included with the app I mentioned.

MemberMotion X-GPS is a cool application for the iPhone, and they make an iPad version as well (Motion-X GPS HD). You can select between their own Motion-X maps, Bing Maps, Google Maps and NOAA Marine maps.

The Sage click series is probably a great choice.

MemberI went to Cabelas (Hamburg) to see if they had a good inventory in the store. And they do – except they have no Silver Mirror 580G ‘s in any model. That was what I wanted to try. I was able to try on frames and found on that fits (Fisch) my big head. Now to find a pair of Sliver Mirrors to see what Zach raves about!
The Silver Mirror 580s are the same tint and transmittence as the Copper 580s. Costa customer service confirmed this. I own both in Brine, so I can attest.
Dan, what advantage is there to the silver over the plain copper if they are both the same color lens and have the same light transmission rating of 12%.
Costa rep says the green is a copper lens also but with a 10% light transmission so 2% darker. I’m trying to decide between these three and without having them in hand it’s… a roll of the dice.
I honestly don’t know.

MemberIf you go Costa, spring for the glass 580 lenses. They are the most expensive they make but also the most resistant to damage and easily the clearest optically. I am a big fan of the 580 glass silver mirrors (which are actually more of a pinkish amber in color and not all that mirrored from the front). I think they are the best all around lens on the market, and I have fished in dozens and dozens of pairs of shades.

I’m three deep in glass-lens Costas.

MemberWhat is going on with the midcurrent site?
It is really hard to find the IFTD articles there.

MemberI’ve thought about getting one of these. I’ve compaired the Contour and the Drift cameras, and I just keep coming back to the GoPro for the video quality and because their waterproof case is an integral part of the product package rather than an afterthought.
The much Contour + camera has some really interesting features though. HDMI output, GPS, and Bluetooth connectivity which apparently allows you to use your smartphone as a remote viewfinder to check your view angle prior to starting a video. At $499 (without a waterproof housing), you pay for these features.
I still like the GoPro package, but it is almost 2 years old and I think I want to wait for the next iteration.
