I went to Cabelas (Hamburg) to see if they had a good inventory in the store. And they do – except they have no Silver Mirror 580G ‘s in any model. That was what I wanted to try. I was able to try on frames and found on that fits (Fisch) my big head. Now to find a pair of Sliver Mirrors to see what Zach raves about!
The Silver Mirror 580s are the same tint and transmittence as the Copper 580s.

Dan, what advantage is there to the silver over the plain copper if they are both the same color lens and have the same light transmission rating of 12%.
Costa rep says the green is a copper lens also but with a 10% light transmission so 2% darker. I’m trying to decide between these three and without having them in hand it’s… a roll of the dice.
I have also been wondering that too…because on cabela’s it is actually really hard to get the right models with silver lenses in glass…
it is a struggle!
Todd – I think I read that Green Mirror is the same tint as Silver but with different light transmission. You might consider that option. Have you checked the Costa Web site to make sure the combination you want isn’t available directly from Costa?
i can get them straight from Costa easily enough….but i have a gift card to redeem from Cabela’s…..
is the consensus then that the green will be just as good as Silver tint? i small stream trout fish 98% of time in midwest….small streams kinda guy…
I received my Fisch Silver Mirror 580’s last week. Took them to one of the local spring creeks. Zach is absolutely right about the silver mirrors and bottom contract. I had a pair of Maui Jim rose to compare them with and I definitely saw more fish with the Costas.

I have the same delema. I wear Bifocals for every day use but do not have RX sunglasses. I wear contacts for hunting and don’t have a problem with the lack of magnifier. Just this last year or so I got more “serious” about trout fishing and realized how important polarized lenses are so I tried step 1: “fitovers” style and they work OK but my wife does not allow me to wear them in public places. I got a kick out of your AARP card reference. This option is also not very comfortable for me.
Moving to step 2: I just ordered a set of Costa 580g with silver mirrors and will try fishing with contacts for a while. I had a hard time finding these to try on anywhere. All of the dealers Costa had listed claimed to only carry them online. I took a gamble and ordered a pair of “Jose” frames. If it does not work out perhaps someone from the board will get a heck of a deal on them?
I can’t wait to try them.
Tim, If you ordered your glasses directly from Costa, you may return them within 10 days if they are too small. You may already have seen it, but the Costa Web site lists sunglasses by frame size.

Just got back from Turneffe Flats where I took along two pair of Costa 580 glasses, a Fathom in the mirrored green/copper lens and a Brine in the mirrored blue/gray lens.
Both are excellent glass but I found the green/copper to be brighter and allowed for more detail. Initially I liked the gray because it wasn’t as intense/bright. But for sight fishing the green/copper won out. We spent 9 to 10 hours a day on the water and I had no eye fatigue with either lens color. Also found the Fathom to offer slightly more peripheral protection but that may be an individual preference.
So, I wore my new Costa 580G Silver Mirrors for a couple weeks in Montana. Both bright and overcast/rainy conditions. These are really fantastic glasses. Expensive but certainly the best I’ve ever owned.
Headed to Tailwaters, Dallas, tomorrow – it’s time to DO IT! Settling in on the 580 in silver mirror.
Well, this is a weak first post but I’ve been lurking for over a year…
I love my Silver 580s. I resisted high-end sunglasses for a long time, but they make a huge difference.
Speaking of sunglasses, I want to see if anyone else has experienced something.
With certain tints and brands of glasses, I’ve noticed a weird, stoplight-red glare on the top of the water, usually when I am viewing the water only at a certain, pretty flat angle, looking mostly toward the direction of the sun.
