    Michael,
I fished with Maui Jims for many years, but recently got a pair of 580G costas with green lens and have seen a tremendous difference with the costas.

I think my decision at this point comes down to silver versus green mirrors in the 580G. I fish fresh water – mostly medium to larger streams and rivers that I float, so I’m guessing that either one will serve me well.

    Michael –

I would be very surprised if you were disappointed with the Silver Mirrors.

Thanks everyone! As always, I value your opinions.

Maybe this would be better for a new topic, but has anyone found a good solution for the special sun-glass problem that accompanies the onset of presbyopia, or “elder-sightedness”?

I have myopia (near-sightedness) also, so I can still tie a fly onto a leader without my contacts or glasses. But, because of that, I find it convenient to wear glasses instead of contacts. If I wear contacts, I have to have some sort of cheater system to attach a fly. Here are the things I’ve tried:

    1. Giant Harry-Carey-style sunglasses that fit over my regular glasses. With those I can still look around my glasses and tie on a fly, but when I wear those gargantuan glasses I feel like I should take a break from the river at about 4:15 and use my AARP card to get the early-dinner special at the nearest Ponderosa.

    2. Polarized clip-ons for my glasses. I can look around the glasses to tie on a fly, but all of the clip-ons I’ve found have been fairly cheap, both in cost and quality.

    3. Contacts with quality sunglasses. With this system I have to use either reading glasses or some sort of magnifiers to tie on a fly. I have a pair of sunglasses with bifocal-like magnifiers, but that only works well until the sun goes down. After that I have to hope I remembered to bring the cheaters.

I usually go with the glasses and clip-ons because I don’t have to worry about bringing additional glasses. This is probably the poorest quality solution, though.

I haven’t tried prescription bifocal sunglasses yet, nor have I tried bifocal contacts.

I’d be grateful to learn how others have coped with this situation. I miss the days of wearing high-quality sunglasses.

Hello all, new member here; looks like a good group, and I love the “no alias” idea.  Forum trolls are irritating, and probably the biggest reason I avoid fishing forums these days.  Thanks for allowing me to join!

On the question of fishing sunglasses; I sightfish (guide) shallow saltwater here in east central Florida, (12″ to 24″) and although some use green, most shallow water flats anglers that I know choose/use amber lenses, mirror & glass or poly being optional.  (Mirror is good for reflecting light.)  I like amber, but I think they both work well.  The offshore guys seem to prefer grey.  A lot of anglers here love Costas; I believe they’re manufactuered here in the Daytona area, but personally I prefer Smith Action Optics.

Tom – You’ve hit on the the number one problem for us senior anglers – beside bending over far enough to get waders off! I tried sunglasses over my regular glasses (which are progressive so I didn’t need a flip focal. Aweful. I finally went to contacts a few years ago and wear regular sunglasses. If I fish well into the evenings, I’ll take my contacts out and put my glasses back on. Makes seeing the fly and changing flies easier, and I still get the protection of full glasses.

I do the same as Brett and sometimes I only use one on my right lens I like being able to place them where it works best for me depending on the lens size.

I went to Cabelas (Hamburg) to see if they had a good inventory in the store. And they do – except they have no Silver Mirror 580G ‘s in any model. That was what I wanted to try. I was able to try on frames and found on that fits (Fisch) my big head. Now to find a pair of Sliver Mirrors to see what Zach raves about!
